The easiest way to make a table of contents in Word is to use a built-in heading style or outline level format for the headings that you want to appear in the table of contents. This section first describes the process of building a table of contents using heading styles, as follows:
1. First apply the heading style to the headings that you want to display in the table of contents.
2. Position the cursor where you want to create the directory, which is generally at the beginning of the document.
3. Perform "insert" → "index and table of contents" → "directory" tab.
4. The settings of "page number", "tab", "format" and so on are the same as the index, no longer repeat. Set the number of directory levels to display in the Display level box (default is 3), if this example uses the level three heading style, to display level three catalogs, set it to 3, or click the Options button to manually setup in the Directory Options dialog box.
5. To change the display of the table of contents, click the Change button to open the Style dialog box, where directory 1 manages one-level directories, and so on. Select the level of the TOC to which you want to change the effect, and click Modify to set it separately. When you are finished setting, click OK to return to the Style dialog box.
6. Click OK to return to the index and Table of Contents dialog box, click OK, and the directory will be inserted at the specified location.
Tip: Click a table of Contents entry or page number to jump directly to its corresponding caption.
Second, update the catalogue
Word creates a directory as a field, and if the page number or title changes in the document, you need to update the table of contents to keep it consistent with the contents of the document. Right-click on the table of Contents and select Update field. You can also select a table of contents and press the F9 key to update the field.
If you want to change the display format of the table of contents, you can rerun the creation of the directory, and finally, a dialog box pops up asking if you want to replace the selected directory and choose Yes to replace it.
