You can modify a style in a slightly different way than you would create a style by following these steps:
1. Perform "format" → "Styles and Formatting" (or click the Format Creation button on the Formatting toolbar) to display the Styles and Formatting task pane.
2. At the bottom of the Display list box, select the type of style that you want to modify, with the styles in use, all styles, and active styles three.
3. In the Please select the format to apply box, move the mouse over the name of the style you want to change, right-click, or click the Drop-down button behind it, and the same menu appears, click Modify on the menu, and the Modify Style dialog box opens.
4. In the Name box, type a new name for the style, and if it is a built-in style, the new text can only be appended to the original style name, and if it is a custom style, the name can be changed.
Note: Unlike the new Style dialog box, the Style Type Drop-down list box in the Modify Style dialog box is grayed out, which means you cannot select the type that modifies the style.
5. If you want to change the base style, select a style as the benchmark in the Style based list box.
6. If you want to update the style's specified subsequent paragraph style, select the style that you want to assign to subsequent paragraphs in the next Paragraph Style list box.
7. Format the styles you want in the dialog box, click the Format button, and select the appropriate command on the menu to define more formatting for the style.
8. If the Automatic Updates check box is selected, when you apply another new format to any paragraph that sets this style, the style is automatically redefined, and Word 2003 automatically updates all paragraphs in the current document that have the style applied to it, and if you want to add the changes you made to the template that created the document, select Add to template check box, otherwise, the modification is only valid for the current document.
9. Click "OK" button to confirm the modification.
