Live CD, alternative CD, and wubi installation will be published before the official release of ubuntu 8.10, and other articles will be published after the release of ubuntu 8.10, to ensure accuracy and timeliness.

In the previous series of article plans, articles about common software are still not taken shape. I am not sure this time can be done. Sometimes the plan cannot keep up with the changes.

In addition, we should also remind everyone that system installation is a dangerous task, especially the installation of dual systems. Therefore, before performing all operations, you must back up the data to avoid irreparable losses! In this revision, the dual system is used as an example to better adapt to the actual situation of readers. One more point is that due to limited conditions, I cannot test the dual-hard drive system and Windows Vista platform. If your machine is installed with a dual hard disk or/or a Windows Vista system, be sure to perform the installation with caution and make backup in advance.

Before you start to install the system, we recommend that you read "Install Ubuntu 8.04 with zero commands (preparation knowledge )", this will greatly benefit your understanding of all the operations during installation.

If everything is ready, start now!

Prepare Hard Disk Partitions

The primary purpose of the remote backup is to prepare the hard disk partitions required for Ubuntu installation. You may have used tools such as PQ magic, Paragon partition manager, and acronis partition expert/Disk Director. But here I don't want to use them to process hard disk partitions, but to prepare hard disk space with the existing Ubuntu installation disk on hand.

If you do not have Ubuntu 8.10 livecd, alternative CD, or ISO files, skip this article because of partition operations on the text interface, this section describes how to use alternative CD to install the system.

Assume that the original system has two partitions (as shown in Figure). One is the primary partition, Windows is installed, and the other is the logical partition, which stores files. The disk space required for Ubuntu installation is divided into logical partitions.

All right, please insert the CD into the optical drive, restart the computer, and select to boot the system from the CD. (If you do not know how to boot the system from a CD, Google it on your own .)

After booting into the CD, you will see a language selection screen:

Select "simplified Chinese", then you will be able to see the Chinese installer selection menu:

We chose the first option "Try Ubuntu without changing anything on the computer" to boot into the livecd system. In this way, we can have a complete operating system environment to process hard disk partitions.

After you press enter, the livecd system starts to boot:

After several minutes, the Wizard is complete and the default account is automatically logged on.

Select "syetem"-"System Management"-"partition Editor" to open the partition editing software:

Click the large partition (/dev/sda5) next to the hard disk and select "partition"-"resize/move" to adjust the partition size:

We can reduce the partition size to 1000 MB. Perform operations as needed. We recommend that you divide the space above 4 GB for normal installation and use of Ubuntu:

Select "unallocated" on the hard disk and select "partition"-"New" to create a partition:

In "Free Space preceding", we enter 512 MB to reserve space for swap partitions. Swap partitions are usually 1-2 times the physical memory size. [Here, "Free Space preceding" is used for no special purpose. You can also enter 512 MB in "New size" to create a swap partition .] Select logical partition in created as; select "ext3" for "file system"; leave the label part blank; check the round to cylinders; and click "add" to complete the settings. Set one of the three text boxes in the space. After filling in the text box, move the cursor. The numbers in the other two dialog boxes are calculated automatically:

For example, you can create swap partitions in the reserved space. You do not need to modify the space size. Select Linux-swap for file system. Other settings are the same as those above:

Select "edit"-"apply all changes" to apply the partition modification:

The dialog box is displayed, prompting you if you want to perform the operation. Because when you press the "Apply" button, the partitioning operation starts. Before that, no modifications were actually applied to the hard disk. If you confirm that the partition is correct, click "Apply" to complete the partitioning operation:

The partitioning operation may take a long time. This depends on the size of the allocated space and the size of the space used by the disk. Please be patient and do not press the "cancel" button under any circumstances-even if you find yourself making a mistake in the partition, unless you know what you are doing-if you do not listen to the advice and cancel the partition operation without any consequences, you will be at risk of losing all disk files !!! In addition, please install a battery on your laptop before the partitioning operation starts to prevent unexpected consequences from unexpected power outages, and the desktop can only be killed-unless you have ups:

After the partition operation is complete, you can press "Save details" to save the operation records, or press the "close" button to close the dialog box:

Now, the partition operation is complete. You can exit the partition program and click the "Install" icon on the desktop to install it directly:

If you do not want to install it for the time being, you can choose "System"-"shutdown" to shut down or restart it.

The introduction to the preparation article has come to an end, because there is a long preface to the waste story. I don't know if you can see it with patience. After completing the preparation, you will have nothing to do with Ubuntu installation.

Although the partition can be completed during the installation process, for the sake of clarity, I have separated this part of content. As you will see, when talking about alternative CD installation, partition operations are described in the system installation section.
