ILor, a U.S. software company in Leicester town, KY, recently accused internet search giant Google of infringing a patent related to its Web search tool.
ILor says the patents it applied for are related to improving hyperlink applications, and Google uses this method without paying any patent fees, the Louisville Messenger Daily website reported.
The lawsuit was filed by iLor in the United States Court of cowington, Kentucky on April 17. On the same day, the U. S. Patent and trademark authority granted the patent to iLor's chief executive officer Steve Mandalay and one of his co-inventors.
In view of this, some people claim that the purpose of applying for this patent is purely to blackmail Google. He said, this is not the case.
"This patent was submitted a few months ago and is an extension of a patent we applied for as early as 2000. In addition, we have been dealing with Google for nearly a year on this issue ."
ILor released a search engine named PreFound last year, which allows users to share earlier search results of other users over the Internet.
He said his company sued Google for a war. The lawsuit is currently on hold because the negotiations between iLor and Google "have reached a stage where we believe there is no better choice ".
The denial of providing specific examples of using the technology on the Google website or the website of another company is tantamount to making a comment directly on the pending lawsuit.
The case of iLor was not comparable to the patent lawsuit between another company in 2001 and RIM, the BlackBerry mobile phone maker, said manentered. In that case, RIM finally paid the plaintiff a settlement fee of $0.6125 billion.
He pointed out that the RIM case involved the core technology of the BlackBerry mobile wireless email service.
"Our patent applications are narrow and technically powerful," he said. "It does not threaten (Google) businesses, but it is very important for some of our businesses ."
