Hard Drive Installation Gentoo

If you use Redhat Linux, the installation will certainly not encounter any big problems,
Whether it's a CD-ROM installation, a hard drive installation, or an NFS network installation is easy,
Because Redhat has provided you with a perfect set of floppy disk.

However, if you do not have a burner, can not be installed on the CD, it is more trouble, because Gentoo
Does not provide a set of installation floppy disks.

After my constant groping, I tried out a way to install Gentoo from the hard disk. Now write it out,
Hopefully it will be helpful to friends who will, or are working on, Gentoo hard drive installations.

1. Download the necessary dongdong.

Download point for Gentoo LiveCD:
http://mirror.pacific.net.au/gentoo/

GRUB for DOS download point:
Ftp://ftp.linuxeden.com/tinybit/grub_for_dos-0.2.0pre13.tar.gz

2. Partition the hard disk.

It is best to partition the hard disk in advance, I use the Redhat installation disk to partition the hard disk.
Of course, you can also use other partitioning tools to partition,
The format of the partition is not necessarily EXT2/3 or swap format, as long as the appropriate size, each partition
The size can be referenced in the Gentoo installation manual. The "/boot" Partition doesn't need to be a lot of 10 trillion.
"/" to stay larger, if you want to compile a lot of software (such as OpenOffice KDE GNOME), the more about good, hehe.

   certainly be careful when zoning, damage your own information, that is a big loss.

3. Copy installation files, and grub for DOS

   Read the contents of Live CD with Deamon tools Copy him to a section (note that you cannot store the partition that is zoned in step 2nd).
   then copies Grub for DOS to a partition (note that it cannot be stored in the partition divided by step 2nd).
   for the sake of simplicity, I copied grub and LiveCD to the same partition.

Introduction to my system hard drive distribution:

Ide1:hda ST 60G
Ide3:cdrom
IDE4:HDD Quantum Bigfoot 12.7G (My gentoo is installed on this hard drive)

HDD1 Ext3/boot |
HDD3 ext3/| -->for Gentoo
HDD4 Swap |

HDD2 DOS Extended Partition
HDD5 FAT32 Logical partition |-->gentoo LIVECD and Grub for DOS
HDD6 NTFS logical partition in this section

4. GRUB Common Commands Introduction:

You can refer to the GRUB Help documentation:
Http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html
or this:
Http://www.yesky.com/20020808/1624211.shtml

5. Edit GRUB for DOS boot configuration file: Menu.lst

What I've written.

#This is a sample menu.lst file. You are should make some changes to it.

Color Black/cyan Yellow/cyan # setting colors to display
Timeout 60 # Wait 60 seconds before starting
Default 0 # defaults to the first option

Title Gentoo Linux on (hd1,4) # first option, content changes as you
Root (hd1,4) # because my installation file is on the 2nd fast hard drive, so it's hd1,
Because it is the 5th partition, the comma is followed by a 4
Kernel/isolinux/gentoo Root=/dev/ram0 INIT=/LINUXRC Acpi=ht
LOOPTYPE=SQUASHFS LOOP=/LIVECD.SQUASHFS Udev Nodevfs
CDROOT=/DEV/HDD5 vga=791 Dokeymap
splash=silent,theme:livecd-2004.3
INITRD =/isolinux/gentoo.igz

# kernel and INITRD, you can refer to the Isolinux/isolinux.cfg file in LiveCD,
Full copy of the content can be, but there is a need to modify, kernel statements in the cdroot after adding your LiveCD file
The location of my copy is on the HDD5, so it is cdroot=/dev/hdd5.

Save, exit. It's OK.

6. Use Grub
Find a DOS boot disk, start the machine, cut to the HDD5,
A:/g:enter (My hdd5 is G-disk in DOS environment)
G:/CD Grub (My grub.exe and menu.lst are stored under G:/grub)
G:/grub Grub--config-file= (hd1,4)/grub/menu.lst
(Start grub,--config-file indicate where Menu.lst is located).

OK now grub interface is present in front of you, choose Gentoo Linux, then Gentoo can LiveCD can start.
There will be an error on startup, probably due to the location of the installation file as a hard drive (cdroot=/dev/hdd5
caused) press Ctrl+d to skip it.
You can then install Gentoo as instructed by Gentoo installation Guide.

7. Do it quickly, enjoy the fun that Gentoo brings to you, hehe.
