Hard Disk installation ubuntu7.04 note

Source: Internet
Author: User

Detailed installation steps:
1. Download ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso
CERNET http://ftp.sjtu.edu.cn/ubuntu-cd/
Http://releases.ubuntu.com/

Then place it in the root directory of A FAT32 partition (I put it under the root directory of the d disk). During installation, UBUNTU will automatically search for it, this is what I think Ubuntu is really weird-you don't need to specify a path! (Note: Download ubuntu-6.06-desktop-i386.iso is useless, hard disk installation can not find, do not know why; although there is a Daxia remedy in the jar, but I think there is no need to leave the distance)

2. Download initrd.gz and vmlinuz (Ubuntu boot file)
CERNET http://ftp.sjtu.edu.cn/ubuntu/dists/feisty/main/installer-i386/current/images/hd-media/
Official http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/main/installer-i386/current/images/hd-media/

Save the above three files in the FAT32 partition root directory (of course, it is better to be the same partition with the ubuntu-6.06-alternate-i386.iso root directory, I save in Windows D disk root directory, linux is/dev/hda5 and grub is (hd0, 4 ).

In this case, the downloaded initrd.gz and vmlinuz files must match the ISO file. Make sure that the version is correct!

3. Download grub020p.zip

Official Address: http://rays.sw-linux.com.cn/tools/grub020p.zip
Decompress grub020p.zip to the C:/root directory (it must be under the root directory !), Then edit C:/boot/GRUB/menu. lst and add:

Title install-Ubuntu 791
Kernel (hd0, 4)/vmlinuz root =/dev/Ram ramdisk_size = 32000 devfs = mount, Dall VGA = 791
Initrd (hd0, 4)/initrd.gz
Boot

Title install-Ubuntu 792
Kernel (hd0, 4)/vmlinuz root =/dev/Ram ramdisk_size = 32000 devfs = mount, Dall VGA = 792
Initrd (hd0, 4)/initrd.gz
Boot

Title install-Ubuntu 771
Kernel (hd0, 4)/vmlinuz root =/dev/Ram ramdisk_size = 32000 devfs = mount, Dall VGA = 771
Initrd (hd0, 4)/initrd.gz
Boot

Note: you can modify the formula (hd0, 4 bytes) for the partition where you put initrd.gz and vmlinuz. For example:
Drive C is (hd0, 0 );
Then, each Logical Disk, whether in Linux or windows, occupies a position, for example:
Drive D is (hd0, 4 );
E disk is (hd0, 5 );
Drive F is (hd0, 6 );
....
For example, there is actually a LINUX partition before disk D, but it cannot be seen in windows, so the disk D in Windows should actually be pushed back one by one, that is (hd0, 5 ).

4. Modify the C:/boot. ini file.

Change to the following format: (that is, add the last line)

[Boot loader]
Timeout = 30
Default = multi (0) disk (0) RDISK (0) Partition (1)/Windows
[Operating systems]
Multi (0) disk (0) RDISK (0) Partition (1)/Windows = "Microsoft Windows XP Professional"/noexecute = optin/fastdetect
C:/grldr = "grub for DOS/Windows"

4. Restart the computer and select grub for DOS/windows.

5. Then select: Install-Ubuntu 771 (this is your option)

6. Start installation. Set the language, keyboard, time zone, network, partition, user name, password, and GRUB as prompted.
Note that partitioning is critical. So here we will focus on the following:

We recommend that you use pqmagic in Windows to separate the free space, that is, the unallocated space (I have allocated 5 GB ), then, create the ext3 primary partition and swap partition on the idle partition during Ubuntu installation.

When creating a partition during Ubuntu installation (in the manual mode), you must first create a swap space (logical partition), which is 700 mb; create an ext3 root partition (primary partition ). Because I have tried to create a root partition (primary partition), the remaining idle partitions are not available and swap partitions cannot be created.

After the two partitions are set, you can choose to write them to the disk! Follow the prompts for installation.

7. In the last step, you need to write grub to MBR. After the installation is completed and restarted, you can enter ubuntu.

Summary:

I think that partitioning is critical in the process of installing Ubuntu on a hard disk. Be careful with this! In addition, the installation media must be placed in the FAT32 format partition. If the drive C is in the NTFS format, the installation will not be affected. Because the ISO file and the boot file are downloaded separately, make sure that the version matches. In addition, I downloaded the vmlinuzfile and found that the .txt extension is automatically added. This must be removed to ensure that there is no extension. Otherwise, the system will prompt error16: file not found during installation.

Well, I think it should be more detailed. Follow this step and the installation will be successful! For more information about the installation process (Author: wukw from: ubuntu.org.cn), thank you!
