Hard disk partition of the pot? What to do if you can't upgrade a Windows 10 creator update

These two days, the news about the WIN10 creator update continues to occupy the large sections, the Internet is full of all kinds of show upgrade, show updated. Bug ... Have you ever wondered what it would be like if one day your computer told you that you couldn't upgrade to the latest version? Today's small series to tell you, how to easily solve this annoying trouble!

This tip doesn't know how many people have seen it.

1. Inquiring

Microsoft's language skills have always been poor, this sentence is translated with plain English, the general meaning is "This computer does not use the UEFI format firmware, so ... WIN10 will not be able to install it. "The implication is that if you use Uefi mode, all problems will be solved regardless of whether you upgrade or install."

That being said, fine been been seems to have many problems. Why are there no problems with the new installation before, and why is this only possible with automatic upgrades? The Hardware partition table changes, do not have to repartition again? Then how to save the original data?

To answer these questions, we must start with a match between the BIOS and the hard disk partition format, a simple summary is:

* Uefi needs to be paired with GPT partition format

* BIOS needs to match MBR partition format

UEFI Boot Mode

2, UEFI, BIOS, GPT, mbr four differences

1) Uefi and BIOS

Both UEFI and BIOS are part of the motherboard interface, and the UEFI is an upgraded version of the BIOS, which appears to replace the traditional BIOS. There are two advantages, one is to allow manufacturers to design the interface to play more inspiration (such as the interface can be more fancy, support mouse operation, etc.), on the other hand is greatly improved the overall security level of the system (such as support partition redundant backup).

UEFI-based motherboard setup interface to see added mouse operation support

Another advantage of UEFI is that it supports GPT hard disk partition format, which is required for more than 2TB hard drives. In other words, if you are using a large capacity of more than 2TB, UEFI+GPT will be your only option, and these are also not available in the traditional BIOS.

Note: The "Quick Launch" supported by Win8 and above is also based on UEFI mode

Win10 's "fast Start" is actually based on UEFI mode

2) GPT and MBR

GPT and MBR belong to the hard disk partition format, that is, you get a new hard disk, you want to store data in the first to determine whether to use the GPT format or MBR format. The benefits of GPT have just been said half, for example, when the hard disk capacity reaches more than 2.1TB, the traditional MBR partition is not supported, then you must use the GPT format.

More than 2TB hard drives are required to use the GPT partition format

In addition, GPT can support n primary partitions, even more than your operating system is not supported (the current version of Windows supports up to 128 GPT partitions), and the MBR only supports four (four primary partitions, the other partitions must be in the form of extended partitions).

In addition, the GPT partition maintains a backup of the boot information on each partition, which can be automatically recovered from each backup. It is this feature that makes it impossible to boot a low-level error such as the operating system, which has become increasingly rare in the new system. These, too, are not available in traditional MBR.

3. Turn back and talk about our problems.

Although the technical principle can be understood by everyone, it still seems to be unable to explain the previous question, that is, why do we encounter the beginning of the image of the hint? In fact, this is mainly because the motherboard manufacturers to play a small flower job. For compatibility reasons (BIOS and UEFI are inherently incompatible, this is to be known to ha), motherboard vendors tend to have built-in BIOS, UEFI two format modules in their products, which means that whatever you install on a tall Windows10, Or a new kind of download a Win98 (note that 98, not 8 ha), all can be installed on the same motherboard running.

The problem is ... The system is no more clever, can not replace people ah. So a very, very troublesome problem came out, that is, your hard disk may be GPT partition, but in the motherboard settings have chosen the BIOS mode. Well, go back and think about our previous question, "Unable to upgrade the installation of WIN10 on this computer because of the existing hard drive format analysis, no matching UEFI interface found"!!! ”

Is there a kind of suddenly steady feeling? That's right!!!! The main reason for this problem is that your hard drive uses the traditional MBR partition, but Uefi Dafa is enabled in the BIOS, and Win10 himself to the whole circle!!!

4. Workaround

Knowing this, the solution is much simpler. Broadly divided into two categories, and these two categories are divided into the destruction of data and do not destroy data.

Programme I. Turn off UEFI mode

Pros: Fast, no data disadvantage: No 2TB large hard drive, no windows quick Start

This method can be completed directly in the BIOS setup, the specific location is "Startup" (or "boot"), the "Launch CSM" changed to "Enabled", "Boot Option Filter" to "Legacy only" can be.

"Launch CSM" is the compatibility mode in the motherboard, which is to turn off UEFI

Scenario two. Using GPT Partitioning

Pros: You can enjoy the benefits of UEFI disadvantages: the need to convert partitioned tables may result in data loss

Since it says that only GPT drives are supported, let's change it to a GPT partition. Changing the partition format of a disk requires the use of a WinPE system. This is not difficult, in the online search for some U Disk Management system (such as old peaches, Micro PE toolbox, etc.) after downloading and booting, usually found in the desktop location of a small tool called Diskgenius (WinPE system built-in).

Download the WinPE Toolbox

Start Diskgenius, select the disk you want to convert, and then click "Convert partition Table Type to GUID" on the "hard Drive" menu to convert from MBR to GPT partition (the GUID is actually a technical synonym for GPT partitioning, both of which are said to be a dongdong). However, due to the innate differences between the two formats, first of all to ensure that the number of primary partitions of the current disk must not exceed 4 (the extended partition needs to be converted to primary partition), but also to reserve a portion of the space as an EFI partition (GPT-formatted boot partition), very cumbersome. So we usually use the quick partitioning feature in Diskgenius to draw the new partition directly (select "Quick Partition" → "GUID"). The problem is that repartitioning is bound to affect the data, which requires users to back up their data in advance.

With Diskgenius, you can change the hard disk partition format to GPT

After converting the partition to GPT, you can enter the BIOS settings to check if Uefi mode is turned on for the motherboard. There is no difference between location and scheme one, the only change is "Launch CSM" changed to "Disabled", "Boot Option Filter" to "UEFI only".

In fact, the simplest method is to repartition, then select "GUID" in the partition table type to

There are children's shoes asked, how to only say the two cases? What if my hard drive is GPT and the motherboard chooses the BIOS mode? The answer to the small series is: this situation ... Pressure...... Root...... Didn't...... Method...... Kai...... Move. The only solution is to adapt the transformation through the last two methods.

Written in the last

After some adjustment, the WIN10 can be upgraded normally. In summary, this is the same because the motherboard interface settings and hard disk partition mismatch caused by the trouble, not a big problem, do not necessarily have to format the reload. But one thing that needs to be said is that only Windows Win7 and above can support UEFI boot, and it has to be 64-bit, so let's be clear!
