Hard Disk installation-Ubuntu notes

Source: Internet

On duty on the first day of the new year, I went to the factory office and turned around. Seeing that Niu Ren was using Linux, he said that XP was not used for a long time. Curious to ask, he introduced ubuntu, I checked that many software under XP are supported on Ubuntu, such as office, QQ, and eclipse. Of course, Visual Studio is not supported. Now, I decided to try Linux, which is said to be the most popular.
First Under the ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso, try to use VMware installed a, found that the installation is very simple, so intends to formally installed on the hard disk. Because I don't want to engrave the disk, I wonder how to use the hard disk to install it.
Then I spent some time in the Forum and asked for some help, saying that the hard disk of the FAT partition can be installed, because my machine is NTFS and I didn't plan to try it until noon today. Since grub4dos is used to guide the installation of the system, it seems that NTFS partitions are now supported. Therefore, according to the instructions on the Forum, Ubuntu is successfully installed through NTFS partitions, the failure experience in the middle is not described here. Here we only talk about the snacks:
Machine configuration: GB hard disk, partition composition: 1, 20 gb ntfs primary partition; 2, gb ntfs extended partition (50 GB, 60 GB logical partition ); 3. Leave the remaining 20 GB of partitions to Ubuntu
First, install grub4dos:
1. Download grldr、initrd.gz and menu. lst (many grub introductions on the Internet ).
2. Edit the boot. ini file in XP: 1 [boot loader]
2 timeout = 15
3 default = multi (0) disk (0) RDISK (0) Partition (1) \ WINDOWS
4 [operating systems]
5 Multi (0) disk (0) RDISK (0) Partition (1) \ Windows = "Microsoft Windows XP Professional"/fastdetect
6c: \ grldr = grub4dos

3. Edit menu. lst: 1 default 0
2 timeout 6
3
4 title install-Ubuntu 7.10
5 kernel (hd0, 0)/Casper/vmlinuz boot = Casper find_iso =/dev/hda1
6 initrd (hd0, 0)/Casper/initrd.gz
7
8 title Boot Windows XP
9 rootnoverify (hd0, 1)
10 makeactive
11 chainloader + 1

Then, place the downloaded image file to the root of drive C, and extract the. Disk and Casper directories to the root directory of drive C.
Then restart, select "grub4dos" and "Install-Ubuntu 7.10", and click Install to install the Ubuntu Desktop.
Note the following two points during the process:
1. Lines 5th and 6 in the menu. LST file are self-guessed, mainly (hd0, 0) And/dev/hda1. The idea is to let them point to the C drive of NTFS and let grub find the Ubuntu image (the Casper directory contains the Ubuntu system, which can be used directly, and ISO should be used for installation, the detailed principle is not studied in depth ).
2. Currently, this is only for research purposes. Only the/swap and/areas are allocated during partition installation. In addition, grub is not written into MBR during installation (because it is a cainiao, I am afraid that XP will be transferred across the whole span, and I do not want to affect the XP startup speed, if you are familiar with it, use grub to guide xp ).
Because I didn't write grub to MBR, Ubuntu is still sleeping on the hard disk and I still don't know how to wake it up. It is easy to use grub.

Note: Later I found that I made the mistake of "taking it for granted". In fact, activating Ubuntu is not something I can do at once. At least before I succeed, I have lost patience and re-installed it, and install grub into MBR, that is, let grub start the entire manager, Windows XP startup management is no longer used.
