1. Introduction to three open-source encoders
1. jm
H.264's official test source code is developed by the German HHI Institute.
Features: all the features of 264 are implemented. Because it is the official test source code, academic research algorithms are implemented on the basis of JM and compared with JM. However, the program structure is lengthy. We only consider introducing various new features to improve the encoding performance, ignoring the encoding complexity. The encoding complexity is extremely high and is not suitable for practical use.
Development Start Time: 2002.2
2. x264
A 264-standard code stream encoder jointly developed by the free online organization. Its founder is a French. X264 has excellent reputation on the Internet.
Features: practical. Compared with JM, we strive to reduce the complexity of coding without significantly reducing the encoding performance, therefore, x264 discards some of the new features that contribute to the encoding performance but have extremely high computing complexity, such as the unneeded block mode and cabac in Multi-reference frames and inter-frame prediction.
Development Start Time: 2004.6
3. t264
The 264 codecs jointly developed by China's free video encoding organization can output standard 264 code streams from the encoder. the decoder can only extract the code streams generated by t264 encoders.
Features: similar to x264, and absorbing the advantages of JM, x264, and XviD.
Development Start Time: 2004.10
