How a removable hard drive is compatible with Mac and Windows systems and can be used on time machine

Your Mac's memory is usually not very large, plus a time machine backup using your Mac, which requires an external USB flash drive or hard drive. U disk storage space is small, we will not go to partition, directly to use on the Mac or Windows on it. So this is just about hard drives. Now the USB interface of the mobile HDD cabbage price, four hundred or five hundred dollars 1 T hard disk is now the most commonly used, but also I buy the type. I hope this drive can be used on a time machine backup or read and write files on Mac and Windows.

Surf the internet a lot, also tried several methods, online about Mac and Windows can read and write hard disk discussion a lot, the approximate method has two kinds:

1. The default file format for mobile drives is NTFS, which is the default file format for Windows, and Windows can read and write directly. After you download the NTFS_FOR_MAC_14.0.456.DMG on your Mac and double-click the installation, your Mac can read and write NTFS-formatted removable hard disks.

NTFS_FOR_MAC_14.0.456.DMG is free for Seagate drives, and I bought the Seagate Plus HDD, which has been tested to be simple and effective.

2. The second method is much more online, and is also provided by the Apple Service staff, in the "launchpad-other-hard drive tool", select the mobile hard drive-erase-Set file format is exFAT, this file format is both Windows and Mac can read and write. This file format also does not have the file and the hard disk size limit, the hard disk has how big, can store how many things.

Although the above two methods have been implemented to read and write on both Mac and Windows, they cannot be used as a time machine backup. Because time machine backup only has one format: Mac os Extension (journaled). 1T hard disk enough to use, and then buy a hard disk or a large storage space on the USB drive seems a little redundant, how to be compatible with Mac and Windows read and write the time machine backup?

Here's how:

1. Erase the removable hard disk on your Mac and set it to Mac OS Extension (journaled) when erased. After the erase is complete, partition the removable hard disk. Because Mac can only partition the disk for this file format, I tested the found, Ntfs, exfat format when partitioned?? The symbol is gray and cannot be used.

I have divided 3 districts:

400g---Purpose: Use as a time machine backup

300g---Purpose: Store files, Mac and Windows read/write compatible

300g---Objective: To keep the spare later

2. These 3 partitions are now in the format: Mac OS Extended (journaled).

The purpose of the first partition is achieved.

Processes the second partition. The mobile hard drive is plugged into the Windows system computer, and the mobile hard disk is not displayed in my computer, because the Mac OS Extended (journaled) hard disk is not recognized by Windows. What about that? Right-click on "My Computer"-"manage", pop up the "Computer Management" box, click on the left sidebar "save",

The right-hand box will show all the disks on the computer at this time, this disk will be shown at the bottom right, and we'll find our mobile disk in the lower right, where the disk is partitioned. Select the second partition here--delete the volume and then "New Simple Volume", where NTFS-formatted partitions are built by default on Windows, and only NTFS partitions are built. Once built, the second partition is in NTFS format.

3. The 3rd partition will be based on subsequent use. You can keep Mac OS extensions (journaled) for Mac only, or you can use the same method as the second partition, or you can erase them in EXFAT format on your Mac.

Well, now aim to achieve:

3 districts:

400g---Purpose: Use as a time machine backup---file format: Mac os extension (journaled)

300g---Purpose: Store files, Mac and Windows read-write compatible---file format: NTFS

300g---Purpose: Save later---file format: Mac OS Extended (journaled) or NTFS or EXFAT
