How can I install and update software on openSUSE like a professional?
You may be considering migrating to SUSE or openSUSE for many reasons. For some people, integrating Linux into a business environment is a reasonable step (SUSE billing support is outstanding, and the openSUSE community is always willing to help ). For others, SUSE or openSUSE is one of the most user-friendly Linux releases on the market.
No matter why you want to migrate to the SUSE ecosystem (whether through SUSE or openSUSE), it is best to know the tools required to complete the task before you proceed. Fortunately, like the Linux community, package management is a user-friendly task-if you know the target object.
Some releases make managing software extremely easy. For Ubuntu Linux! The Ubuntu Software Center icon is the most prominent position on the Launcher. Click this icon to search for thousands of applications to be installed. If openSUSE is used, you will not find that the starter is in a prominent position, but this tool is easy to find and use.
You may wish to explore the openSUSE package management world from the GUI perspective. After reading this article, you should be able to easily install software, update machines, or even add software libraries (so that you can install third-party applications ).
You only need YaST2
One outstanding part of The SUSE field is that they concentrate the vast majority of system management on one tool named YaST2 (another setting tool. You can handle many things from YaST2-one of them is the software on the management system.
I am going to use the latest openSUSE (13.2) and KDE desktops. If you select the GNOME desktop environment, this will not change YaST (just change how you find YaST2 ).
The easiest way to find YaST2 is to open the KDE "K" menu and enter "yast" in the search bar (see figure 1 ). Click YaST2 to start the tool.

Once YaST2 is opened, click the Software item (see figure 2) on the left-side Navigation Pane to display all available Software-related items.

Install software
The first point I want to demonstrate is how to install a software. This is quite simple. In the Software section of YaST2, click Software Management to wait for the Software Management system to open.
1. enter the name of the software you want to install in the search box.
2. Click Search ).
3. After the software appears in the main panel, click the related check box (see figure 3 ).
4. Click Accept ).
5. Browse dependencies (a pop-up window will appear ).
6. If the dependency is acceptable, click Continue ).
7. Complete the installation process.
8. After the software is installed, click Finish ).

That's it! You have installed the first software on openSUSE.
Update Software
One of the most important tasks you can do with YaST2 is to update the system. Updates are critical because they often contain security patches and fixes. You can process the new version from the same child part (software) of YaST2. In this sub-part, you will find an item named Online Update (Online Update ). Click this item, and YaST2 will check for available updates. After the check, the system displays a complete list of available updates (see figure 4 ).
Use YaST2 to update the system.
