Problem description

Recently, I am working on it standardization for more than 100 computers of a foreign company customer. The company has determined the model as Dell Elastic Compute service 7370.
And the Dell poweredge 5050 SFF. The laptop has canceled the traditional RJ45 interface and can only use the USB RJ45 adapter or the docking station to connect the network cable to deploy the system through PXE. However, in actual operations, it cannot be started from PXE by default, you cannot see the NIC startup option.

Problem Analysis

We use USB to RJ45, USB Type C to RJ45, and Dell to start from PXE with RJ45 in the extended library of the notebook. We cannot see the NIC startup option. We think there should be a configuration item for enabling or disabling PXE startup in the BIOS. I couldn't find it after I found it. I was notified by the Dell after-sales hotline that the iPhone belongs to a home machine and cannot start it from PXE, either make the system image a USB flash drive or remove the hard disk and plug it back. The Dell Technical Support suggestions cannot be implemented. The efficiency of manual installation is too low for the batch deployment of nearly one hundred machine systems.

After confirmation with the customer's headquarters it, We can prioritize UEFI for this deployment. After one-by-one testing, the locations of desktops and laptops in the BIOS are determined. By default, these settings are disabled. After changing the settings, use USB to RJ45 again, USB Type C to RJ45, and Dell to start from PXE with RJ45 on the extension library of the notebook, only the original Dell docking station can be smoothly started from PXE, non-original USB to RJ45, USB Type C to RJ45 do not work.

Solution

For desktops (the customer is a Dell poweredge 5050 SFF), select enable UEFI network stack under the settings-system configuration-integrated Nic option in BIOS, make sure that enable w/PXE is selected:

For a laptop (the customer is Dell migration 7370), select enable UEFI network stack under settings-General-advanced boot options in BIOS:

After saving the settings, restart the computer to view the startup items from the NIC:

If you have enabled PXE boot settings in the bios but cannot start PXE from a non-Dell original USB to RJ45, the reason is that these transfer devices will not work until they are loaded into the Windows system. We searched from the Dell official website. In fact, there is an original Dell USB typec to RJ45 adapter, and native support starting from PXE. To facilitate routine maintenance work, we purchased four external adapters for the conversion from the original Dell USB Type C to RJ45. You can clickDell adapter-USB-C to Ethernet (PXE boot) add Link DescriptionLink to view detailed parameters.

Experience Summary

If you encounter a similar problem, we recommend that you try it in multiple ways. The official technical support may be to give you support through the information obtained from the knowledge base, which is not necessarily effective.
