How do I insert a subtotal in an Excel worksheet

1. Open the worksheet where you want to create subtotals, select the column that contains the employee department, and then click the Descending button in the sort and filter group on the Data tab, as shown in Figure 1. At this point, Excel 2013 gives the Sort Reminder dialog box to let the user select the sort by, where you can click the Sort button to close the dialog box, as shown in Figure 2.

2. Select any cell in the worksheet, and then click the Subtotals button in the outline group on the Data tab, as shown in Figure 3.

3, open the Subtotals dialog box, select the Employee Department option in the Category field Drop-down list to indicate subtotals by employee department, select the average option in the totals by Drop-down list, and tick the January score check box in the Selected Totals list box. Use the January scoring data as a summary object, as shown in Figure 4. When you finish setting up and click OK to close the dialog box, you can create subtotals on the worksheet, as shown in Figure 5.

Attention

After you add subtotals, the worksheet displays the total row at the bottom. Totals are derived from detail data, not from the values of subtotals. For example, when you summarize by average, the totals row shows the average of all the details, not the average of the subtotal rows.
