However, the types of optical fiber are single-mode optical fiber and multi-mode optical fiber. They share the advantages of optical fiber, but also have some differences. 1. From the perspective of investment, OptiSPEED (Common multimode 62.5/125) will not be used for 10 Gbit/s in at least 10 years. Because OM3 uses low-cost VCSEL and 850nm light source equipment, this greatly reduces the cost of 10 Gigabit transmission. If the distance is no more than 150 meters, LazrSPEED 150 is selected (OM2 50/125 supports 10 Gigabit 150 meters); LazrSPEED 300 is the best choice for 10 Gigabit transmission of 300 meters; lazrSPEED 550 is the best choice for 550 m 10 m transmission. If you want to transfer more than 550 m 10 m, you need to select TeraSPEED, that is, single-mode optical cable system.

2. In terms of future development trends, the horizontal cabling network speed needs to be 1 Gbit/s wide to the desktop, and the building's backbone network needs to be upgraded to 10 Gb/s bandwidth, the Campus Backbone Network must be upgraded to a bandwidth of 10 Gbit/s or 100 Gbit/s. Currently, network applications are growing at an annual rate of about 50%. It is expected that the next 5 years will reach the desktop level, which will become as common as the current MB to the desktop level, therefore, the system planning should be forward-looking. Therefore, the mode color dispersion is small, which is suitable for remote communication, but there are still material dispersion and Waveguide Dispersion. In this way, the single-mode optical fiber has a high requirement on the spectral width and Stability of the light source, that is, the spectral width must be narrow, good stability.

The total dispersion of a single-mode optical fiber is zero at the wavelength of 1310nm. According to the optical fiber loss characteristics, 1310nm is exactly a low-loss window of the optical fiber. In this way, the 1310nm wavelength zone becomes an ideal working window for optical fiber communication, and is also the main working band of the current practical optical fiber communication system. The main parameters of 1310nm conventional single-mode optical fiber are determined by the ITU ITU-T in G652 recommendations, so this kind of optical fiber is also called G652 optical fiber.

As mentioned above, because of the absorption effect of OH peaks (Water peaks), 900 ~ 1300nm and 1340nm ~ There is a loss peak in the 1520nm range, which is called a water peak.
