How does DHCP redundancy occur?

We have learned a lot about the DHCP service. It includes basic content, configuration, troubleshooting, and other related knowledge. Here we mainly talk about DHCP redundancy. I hope this article will give you some reference. The specific content is as follows:

Why is DHCP redundant?

On the campus network, IP address management for hundreds of computers is not a small problem. To solve this problem, I believe many campus network administrators will use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to dynamically assign IP addresses to clients. But this also means that if your DHCP server is paralyzed for some reason, the DHCP service will naturally become unavailable, and the client will not be able to obtain the correct IP address, thus affecting the operation of the entire campus network.

How can this problem be solved? You can configure more than two DHCP servers. If one of the DHCP servers fails, the other DHCP server automatically undertakes the task of allocating IP addresses. for users, this process is transparent and users do not know the changes to the DHCP server.

How to Implement DHCP Redundancy

Because most schools use Windows 2000 Server as the Server operating system, we will only talk about the implementation of DHCP Server redundancy in Windows 2000 Server.

In Windows NT, setting up a DHCP server does not require authorization. That is to say, if someone sets up another DHCP server in the network, the DHCP service also works, this is obviously not conducive to network security. In Windows 2000 Server, the DHCP service cannot be started even if the DHCP service is started on a Server in the Active Directory, the error message "DHCP server not found" appears.

How can I authorize the DHCP server? After logging on to the authorized server as an administrator, click "start", find "Management Tools" in "programs", and find "DHCP" in "Management Tools ", click to start the DHCP service management program. Right-click "DHCP" on the left of the program, and click "manage authorized server" in the pop-up menu. The window shown in 1 appears.

Click [authorize (A)...]. The "authorize server" window appears. In the text box, enter the name or IP address of the server that has installed the Active Directory, as shown in 2.

After you click the [OK] button, if the network connection is normal, the authorization is successful. If the network is faulty or the computer name or IP address is incorrect, the "DHCP service cannot access Windows Active Directory" error message 3 appears.

After authorization, the DHCP service takes effect. In this case, the IP address range, subnet mask, and other options are set, and the DHCP service starts to work. The detailed process is not described here due to space limitations.

What should I pay attention to when using DHCP redundancy?

When setting redundant DHCP services, you must note that there must be at least two Windows 2000 Server servers in the network, one of which must be installed with the Active Directory Service (that is, the domain controller ), in addition, the network connection between servers must be in good condition.

After the above settings, we have implemented DHCP redundancy, and we do not have to worry about IP Address Allocation in the future.
