The larger bandwidth required by these applications, including hd iptv transmission and multimedia distribution systems, is far from the current broadband access technology. 10 Gbit/s EPON (10 Gbit/s Ethernet Passive Optical Network) technology (the proposed IEEE Standard 802.3av) is a new technology that meets higher bandwidth requirements. The network bandwidth of the EPON optical fiber access technology has increased by 9 times (up to 10 Gbps) and is compatible with the kernel protocol of the current 1g epon solution.

10g epon ftth Technology

The current 1g epon technology is a leading PON technology defined by the IEEE 802.3ah standard. It is widely used in China, Japan and South Korea. One advantage of EPON (also known as GEPON) is that it is based on the local Ethernet transmission protocol. Low-cost asynchronous Ethernet has been deployed in LAN and extended data networks for many years. Compared with network devices based on clock synchronization ATM, Ethernet-based network devices have obvious economies of scale advantages. With the increasing application of 10 GB Ethernet in data centers and man, the relative economic advantages of the 10 Gb EPON solution will be maintained.

Another optional GPON solution defined by the ITU-T G.984 standard, with a faster downstream data rate (2.5 Gbps) and faster upstream data rate (1.25 Gbps ), however, when it supports Ethernet transmission protocols, it uses a different general encapsulation method (GEM) transmission protocol to package non-local protocols such as Ethernet, ATM and TDM. Many countries in North America and some Europe are preparing to deploy GPON devices in batches, but so far, large-scale production has not yet been achieved.

PMC-sisierra has been actively involved in drafting 1g epon ieee and the new 10g epon ieee Standard, helping to create the initial EPON standard and participate in the development of the 10g epon standard. In addition, PMC-sisierra is the only vendor that can provide both EPON and GPON devices.

As the 1g epon standard has been successfully applied in the field, a key issue in the development of the new 10g epon standard is to ensure backward compatibility with the existing 1g epon network. The new standards have been fully taken into consideration, so that a single PON network can support 1g and 10g bandwidth. In addition, the new standard supports symmetric 10 Gbit/s upstream and downstream bandwidth links, 10 Gbit/s downstream and 1 Gbit/s upstream links, or other combinations of the two. Figure 1 shows an asymmetric 10G/1g epon network deployment diagram.

10g epon will be applied in two scenarios. First, use EPON-based optical fiber access technology to replace copper-based technology. In this application scenario, a problem is to select between 10 Gbit/s EPON, EPON, and GPON. Whether the other part of the network uses a certain technology will affect the selection result. The cost of a 10g epon device is expected to be roughly the same as that of an EPON device and a GPON device. Therefore, deploying a 10g epon device from the very beginning will not be restricted in all new application scenarios. In another application scenario, 10 Gbit/s EPON may coexist with the EPON optical fiber access technology network or replace the latter. In this case, it is important to upgrade from 1g epon to 10g epon.
