Even if Edge plans to end with a failure, Ubuntu's determination to enter the mobile field without interruption. A few days ago, Ubuntu developer Canonical announced that it will not only release Ubuntu next April, which will be further adapted to mobile devices in 14.04, but has negotiated with four "large mobile phone manufacturers, it is expected that Ubuntu mobile phones will be available next year.

But there are indications that the Linux-based operating system is not on its way to the mobile field.

First, although it was announced in 2011 that it plans to support mobile devices such as tablets and mobile phones, Ubuntu has not officially supported TRIM, a technology that is very important for SSD storage, it was a little surprising.

TRIM is essentially an instruction that allows the system to tell the SSD which disk locations are occupied by data is invalid or do not need to be retained, thus reducing unnecessary read/write, it ensures the lifetime and performance of SSD after long-term operation. A few years ago, the Ubuntu ext4 file system had already supported TRIM, but users needed to use additional methods to open it.

Fortunately, Ubuntu will officially announce that it will provide official support for version 14.04 next year (TRIM function will be enabled by default ), for mobile devices that rely heavily on flash storage, running Ubuntu is guaranteed.

However, this is only the tip of the iceberg in the mobile field of Ubuntu. Compared with the high-profile release at CES in the United States at the beginning of the year, the Ubuntu mobile version has recently entered a low tide.

There will always be many gaps between ideals and reality.

First, the first Ubuntu Phone, which was originally planned to be available with Ubuntu October this year in 13.10, did not arrive as scheduled. In the test, we found that, version 13.10 only supports mobile devices on Web browsers, dial-up interfaces, information, photo browsers, and system settings. But obviously this is still far from enough for a phone call. A large number of features that need to be compatible with the Mobile End are disappointing. The biggest selling point promised on Ubuntu Edge at the beginning: Connecting the display to the extended feature of Ubuntu for the desktop version is far from enough. The product manager of Canonical said that the new graphic structure of the mobile version is not yet fully supported, and the improvement still takes a few days.

The Ubuntu 13.10-based mobile system is hailed as Ubuntu Touch 1.0. As the mobile project progresses poorly, many original visions will be postponed to Ubuntu 14.04, which will be pushed to April next year. According to the data, Ubuntu Touch 1.5 (14.04 of the desktop version) will be able to supplement some of the missing functions on Version 1.0, such as the mobile phone vibration mode, bootsplash, and even the animation effect of the on/off server.

Can we see a complete Ubuntu Touch System in next April? No one can answer questions for the moment, but in this mobile device market that has been held by iOS and Android for 92% of its share, it is necessary to create a bloody path in addition to excellent systems and hardware, the establishment of the ecosystem is also very important, and the prospects for developers to support Ubuntu Touch are still dark.

Canonical plans to bring at least one Ubuntu Phone to the market next year, along with a high-end route. At least for the time being, in addition to more efforts by vendors and developers, it is believed that it will require a lot of luck.
