Microsoft will continuously release upgrade programs for users to install. These upgrades are system patches. Therefore, it is necessary to install system patches for Windows in a timely manner.

What is a Windows Patch?

There are two types of system patches released by Microsoft: Hotfix and Service Pack. The differences and connections between them are described below.

Therefore, Microsoft packages all these Hotfix patches into a program for users to install. This is the Service Pack (SP. The Service Pack contains all Hotfix programs before the release date. Therefore, if you install it, you can ensure that you do not miss a Hotfix program. In addition, the Service Pack program that is released late will contain the previous Service Pack, for example, SP3 will contain all patches for SP1 and SP2.

How to update and install patches

1. Manual Installation

In addition, websites of various security websites and anti-virus software vendors often have security warnings and provide related solutions. Of course, they also include links to download various patches. After downloading the patch through the link, you only need to run the installation and follow the prompts.

2. Online update

Manual installation is troublesome, and you do not know which patches are required by the system. Therefore, you are recommended to use online automatic update. Take Win2000 as an example: Go to the control panel and double-click "Auto Update ". Select the check box "keep my computer up to date ......". In this case, select the corresponding download and installation method from the "Settings" option. You can select the method based on your actual needs. In this way, the system's automatic update function is enabled, and the system will automatically connect to the Microsoft website to download updates, which is very simple.

In addition, you can go to the "Tools" menu of IE and click the "Windows Update" command. IE will automatically openHttp://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/And automatically checks the system. As Microsoft updates the website, it is required to download new online update software. After a while, IE displays the update method selection page (figure 1 ). The page provides a quick and custom upgrade method. We recommend that you select the "quick" method. This method only finds the most important update programs that are most suitable for your computer. After you click the "quick" button, IE will automatically find the latest update program (figure 2 ). Then, IE needs to install the corresponding components so that you can install them in the next step. Click "download and install now". After the installation is complete, the system restarts. Go to the upgrade website again and click the "Microsoft Update" link. The new version of the Update page is displayed in IE (Figure 3 ). Click "Start now. How to know which patches are installed in the system

1. view through the Registry

After the system patch is installed, the Registry will leave relevant information. The specific location varies with the operating system:

The author recommends WinUpdatesList, a tool for displaying and managing system patch information. The main window of the WinUpdatesList contains two panels (figure 4): the top panel displays a list Of all updates installed on your computer. When you select a hotfix (Update type) Update in the upper panel, the following panel displays the list of files for the selected hotfix installation.
