How to add different headers and footers or page numbers to different parts of a document

For example, you might want to use the I, II, and III numbers for the table of contents and profiles, with 1, 2, 3 numbers for the rest of the document, and no page numbers for the index.

In addition, you can use different headers or footers on odd and even pages.

Add a different header and footer or page number to a different section

1. Click the beginning of the page where you want to start setting up, stop setting, or change the header, footer, or page number.

Press home to make sure the cursor is at the beginning of the page.

2. On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Separator.

3. Under section breaks, click Next.

4. Double-click the header area or footer area (near the top of the page or the bottom of the page).

This opens the Design tab under Header and Footer tools.

5. In design, in the Navigator group, click Link to previous section to disable it.

6. Perform one of the following actions:

Follow the instructions in adding page numbers or adding headers and footers that contain page numbers.

Select the header or footer, and then press Delete.

7. To select a numbering format or starting number, click Page number in the header and Footer group, click Format Page number, click the format you want, and then click OK.

8. To return to the body of the document, click Close Headers and footers on the Design tab (under Header and Footer tools).
