How to add programs and Windows components in Windows 2003

This article describes how to add programs and Windows components to a Windows Server 2003-based computer.

The Add or Remove Programs tool helps you manage programs on your computer. With this tool, you can add new programs or change, and delete existing programs. You can also use the Add or Remove Programs tool to add Windows Server 2003 components (such as networking Services) that you did not install at the time of the initial installation.

How to install Windows components

Log on to the computer as a member of the "administrator" or "Administrator" group.

Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then select Add or Remove Programs.

Click Add/Remove Windows components. The Windows Components page of the Windows Components Wizard appears on the screen, and the following components are listed in the component list (the Windows component shown in this list may vary depending on the version of Windows Server 2003 that is running):

InternetExplorer

To add a component, click the appropriate check box to select it. To remove a component, click the appropriate check box to clear it.

Note: A shaded check box indicates that only part of the component can be installed.

To see the contents of a component, click the component, and then click Details. Click the check box next to the child component you want to add, select it, and then click OK.

Note: If the Details button (dimmed) is not available, the component does not have a subassembly associated with it.

Click Next.

Follow the instructions in the remaining pages of the Windows Components Wizard for XX.

Click Close to close the Add or Remove Programs dialog box.

Note: Before using certain Windows components, you need to configure them first. If you have one or more of these components installed, but you do not configure them, when you click Add/Remove Windows components, a list of components that must be configured is displayed. To configure the component, click Configure, and then follow the instructions on the screen for XX. To add a new component, click the component, and then follow the instructions in the Windows Components Wizard to make XX.

Example of a DHCP service installation

Log on to the computer as a member of the "administrator" or "Administrator" group.

Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.

Click Add/Remove Windows components.

In the list of components, click Networking Services (but do not select or clear the check box), and then click Details.

Click the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) check box to select it (if it is not selected), and then click OK.

Click Next.

When prompted, insert the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

The installer copies the DHCP server and tool files to your computer.

When the installation is complete, click Finish on the Windows Components Wizard page.

How to install a program

To install the program, follow the steps below (if appropriate for your situation).

To install a program from a CD-ROM or floppy disk

Log on to the computer as a member of the "administrator" or "Administrator" group.

Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.

Click Add New Program.

Click Disc or floppy disk.

Insert the floppy disk into your computer's floppy disk drive, or insert the CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then click Next.

Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install the program by doing XX.

Click Close to close the Add or Remove Programs dialog box.

Note: When you use the Add/Remove Programs tool, you can install only programs that are written for the Windows operating system.

To install a program from a network

Log on to the computer as a member of the "administrator" or "Administrator" group.

If the program is installed from a CD-ROM, or if you are no longer connected to the network, Windows Installer may prompt you to insert the disc into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
