How to back up data using floating static routes

Floating Static Routing is still very commonly used. Here we mainly explain how to use floating Static Routing for backup. Financial Enterprises are transmitting key business data over the network, network equipment is required to have high reliability, which requires the use of the router's backup function.

In the network transformation, after replacing the original X.25 group leased line with a frame relay line, it is indeed fast and reliable. But what about the replaced X.25 group leased line? We decided to use floating Static Routing Technology to back up the X.25 leased line for Frame Relay. If Frame Relay fails, the vro automatically starts the X.25 Group to establish a connection, ensuring the reliability of the entire network. The following describes the vro floating static route backup technology.

By default, the route sequence of the Cisco router is static, dynamic, and default. This is determined by the weights of various routes. You can manually change the weight of a static route so that after a dynamic route, the static route becomes a floating static route. If no route is found in the dynamic routing table, the floating static route can be selected to transmit data. Static Routing is configured as follows: IP route destination subnet address subnet mask adjacent router adjacent port address weight

The higher the weight value, the lower the route priority, and the weight range is 1 ~ In the range of 255. First, the port connecting to the frame relay must run the dynamic routing protocol, and the port connecting to the grouped leased line must use static routing. In this example, select OSPF as the routing protocol and set the Metric value of the static route to 200. Because the default Metric value of OSPF is 90, when there are two paths to the same network segment at the same time, the path with a small Metric value takes effect. When there is a problem with the frame relay connection, the router cannot learn the route table through the routing protocol. In this case, the static route takes effect and the access is implemented through port X.25. When the Frame Relay connection returns to normal, the router can learn the route table. Due to the different Metric values, the static routing is automatically replaced by dynamic routing, so that the backup function is realized. Generally, the X.25 line uses floating static routes for Frame Relay backup, which is particularly suitable.

Steps for configuring floating static routes:

1. Correctly configure the main route to ensure normal communication;
2. configure a dynamic route for the main route;
3. Correctly configure the backup line to ensure normal communication;
4. configure a floating static route through the backup line.
