SSL is a secure and confidential Internet communication protocol that encrypts transmission of sensitive data in HTTP requests. If the session, encryption, and decryption processes are all processed by the Web Server, it will cause a great burden on the Server. Therefore, the SSL accelerator hardware came into being and uses additional hardware to implement SSL communication, reduce CPU load. However, some companies currently offer very expensive SSL accelerators, such as F5 Networks's Big-IP 6900 price of up to $50 thousand.
John Buswell describes how to create an open-source SSL accelerator. For Linux, you can choose Ubuntu Server, CentOS, or Fedora Core for the release, the main application is open-source web server Nginx (Engine-X ). The hardware model is two AMD Opteron 2380 GHz quad-core processors, Intel Server Gigabit NIC, 32 GB memory, the price is only US $5. It can process more than 26,590 TPS, while Big-IP 6900 can process up to 25,000 TPS.
