Content feed: The presence of the Hiberfil.sys file will make the system unable to complete a full defragmentation of the disk, this article describes how to delete the Hiberfil.sys file before defragmenting.
Many Windows XP users are now accustomed to using the system-provided hibernate function, because this eliminates the time of the switch and can be restored directly to the original working state each time it is turned on, such as an article that was originally being written or a picture being drawn. However, I do not know if you noticed that hibernation, although it has such advantages, but also brings some small inconvenience.
If you regularly defragment your hard disk and review the defragmentation report when you finish, you may notice that some of the files in this report cannot be sorted, leaving a lot of debris on your hard drive. And there will be Hiberfil.sys files.
So what is this Hiberfil.sys file for? When we have the Hibernate feature enabled in Windows XP, Windows XP writes everything in memory to the Hiberfil.sys file every time the system goes into hibernation, and Windows XP does not delete the file when the system resumes from hibernation. Instead of putting it on the hard disk as it was, it was no longer needed, and the file took up a bit of space without saying that it was a stumbling block to defragmenting the disk. If the file is not processed for a long time, the disk fragmentation of the Hiberfil.sys file cannot be sorted.
The Hiberfil.sys file can become very large, and the Disk Defragmenter cannot defragment it, so its presence makes it impossible for the system to complete a full defragmentation. So we'll consider, can we delete it and then defragment it?
The Hiberfil.sys file is typically located in the root directory of the partition where the XP system resides, and is a hidden system file. Although you can delete it manually, it is recommended that you use the following method.
Open Control Panel, double-click Power Options, select the Hibernate tab, deselect the Enable Hibernate check box, and then click the Apply or OK button, as shown in the following illustration.
By doing this, Windows XP automatically deletes the Hiberfil.sys file. Next we can defragment, after finishing, then the "Enable Hibernate" check box to restore the use of hibernation function.
