How to configure VLANS on vSwitches, pSwitches, and virtual machines
Generally, there are three possible VLAN tags:
External switch flag (EST)
Vswitch flag (VST)
Virtual client flag (VGT)
We recommend a very good VMware official PDF file: VMware ESX Server 3: 802.1Q VLAN solution.
And the following articles on the VMware knowledge base:
Configuration example for connecting ESX to a physical switch through VLAN access and external switch flag (EST Mode)
Vswitch VLAN flag (VST mode) configuration example
Virtual Machine VLAN tag (VGT mode) configuration example
External Switch Tagging)
Therefore, VLAN flag data packets are processed on the physical switch.
The port connecting the network adapter of the ESX host to the physical switch.
The port group connecting to the vswitch must have its own vlan id set to 0.
Virtual Switch Tagging)
All VLAN flag packets are processed on the vswitch before they are sent to the ESX host.
The network adapter of the ESX host must be connected to the relay port of the physical switch.
The port group connecting to the vswitch must have a specified vlan id.
Virtual Guest Tagging)
All VLAN tags are processed by virtual machines.
A 802.1Q VLAN relay driver must be installed on the virtual machine.
When a data frame passes through a vswitch, the VLAN mark is stored between the virtual machine network stack and the external switch.
Set the physical switch port to the Trunk port.
