How to convert image, audio, and video formats on Ubuntu

Install Format Junkie to Ubuntu 13.10

If you are running Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander), follow these steps to download the. deb installation package. Since the Format Junkie. deb installation package has only a few dependent packages, you can use gdebi deb installer to install it.

On 32-bit Ubuntu 13.10:

  1. $ Wget https://launchpad.net /~ Format-junkie-team/+ archive/release/+ files/formatjunkie_1.07-1 ~ Raring0.2 _ i386.deb
  2. $ Sudo gdebi formatjunkie_1.07-1 ~ Raring0.2 _ i386.deb
  3. $ Sudo ln-s/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/formatjunkie/formatjunkie/usr/bin/formatjunkie

On 32-bit Ubuntu 13.10:

  1. $ Wget https://launchpad.net /~ Format-junkie-team/+ archive/release/+ files/formatjunkie_1.07-1 ~ Raring0.2 _ amd64.deb
  2. $ Sudo gdebi formatjunkie_1.07-1 ~ Raring0.2 _ amd64.deb
  3. $ Sudo ln-s/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/formatjunkie/formatjunkie/usr/bin/formatjunkie
Install Format Junkie in Ubuntu 14.04 or later

The available official Format Junkie. deb file requires a libavcodec-extra-53, but it has become obsolete since Ubuntu 14.04. If you want to install Format Junkie on Ubuntu 14.04 or later, you can use the following third-party PPA.

  1. $ Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: jon-severinsson/ffmpeg
  2. $ Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: noobslab/apps
  3. $ Sudo apt-get update
  4. $ Sudo apt-get install formatjunkie
How to use Format Junkie

After the installation is complete, run the following command to start Format Junkie:

  1. $ Formatjunkie
Use Format Junkie to Convert audio, video, image, and archive formats

As shown below, the Format Junkie user interface is simple and intuitive. Click the one you need in the top audio, video, image, and iso media tabs. You can add any number of files as needed for batch conversion. After adding the file, select the output format and click "Start Converting" to convert the file.

Format Junkie supports conversion between the following media formats:

  • Audio: Mp3, wav, ogg, wma, flac, m4r, aac, m4a, mp2.
  • Video: Avi, ogv, vob, mp4, 3gp, wmv, mkv, mpg, mov, flv, webm.
  • Image: Jpg, png, ico, bmp, svg, tif, pcx, pdf, tga, pnm.
  • Archive: Iso, cso.
Subtitle encoding using Format Junkie

In addition to media conversion, Format Junkie provides a graphic interface for subtitle encoding. The actual subtitle encoding is completed by MEncoder. To use the Format Junkie subtitle encoding interface, you must first install MEencoder.

  1. $ Sudo apt-get install mencoder

Click the "Advanced" label in Format Junkie. Select the AVI/subtitle file for encoding, as shown below:
