Author information:This article is composedOpenlogicFounder,EngineeringOfDirectorEric WeidnerWrittenThis article describes how the companyCentosThe customer provides support and services, which details how to obtain and runWindows azure virtual machinesOnOpenlogic centosImage.
Openlogic provides services and support for more than 700 different open-source code packages, including commercial support for centos and enterprise-level Linux distribution derived from the source code provided by Red Hat Enterprise Linux for the public. Our goal of supporting centos is to ensure that enterprises can use such a fully open method to replace Enterprise Linux distributions that are known and widely used by customers.
From around last April, we have worked closely with the Windows azure team to make open logic centos images available in the Image Library of the Windows azure preview Management Portal. Our peers, like Henry Jerez, have been focusing on providing better solutions for our common customers and working with us to face a series of problems to ensure that they are "online" on time ".
The benefit of centos and Windows Azure is that they rarely get running openlogic images. It is as easy for users to obtain open logic centos images on the Windows azure portal. They only need to answer a few basic installation questions and then wait five minutes to start the centos server. There are also tools for developers to perform automated interaction with the platform.
The openlogic centos image running on Windows azure can be expected to have a broader, more selective, and predictable deployment process implementation. In addition, they have obtained distribution servers that run traditional data centers that they are already familiar.
To illustrate how easy it is, the following describes in detail how to use Windows azure management to create a custom Virtual Machine to run the portal openlogic centos image:
1. log on to the Windows azure Management Portal. In the command bar, clickNew.
2. vm OS SelectionThe dialog box is open. Now you can select an image from image gallery.
3. ClickPlatform Images, SelectOpenlogic centos 6.2Image, and then click the arrow to continue.
4. ClickPlatform Images, SelectOpenlogic centos 6.2Image, and then click the arrow to continue.
AppearsVM Configuration.
5. InVirtual Machine nameEnter the name of the virtual machine you want to use. The name must be at least 15 characters long. EnterMytestvm1.
6. InNew User NameEnter the name of the account you want to use to manage the virtual machine. You cannot use the root in the user name. EnterNewuser1.
7. InNew PasswordEnter the password used for the user account on the VM. EnterMypassword1. InConfirm PasswordEnter the password you just entered.
8.InSizeSelect the size of the virtual machine you want to use. The size you select depends on the number of applications required by the kernel. For this virtual machine, use the defaultExtra small.
9. Click the arrow to continue. You can connect multiple virtual machines to provide reliable applications based on cloud services. However, in this tutorial, you can only create a single virtual machine. To perform this operation, selectStandalone Virtual Machine.
10. You can connect multiple virtual machines to provide reliable applications based on cloud services. However, in this tutorial, you can only create a single virtual machine. To perform this operation, selectStandalone Virtual Machine..
11. The virtual machine you created is included in cloud services. InDNS nameEnter a name for the cloud service created for the VM. The name can contain 3-24 lower-case letters and numbers. It serves as a part of the URI to link the cloud service to which the machine belongs. For this virtual machine, TypeMyservice1.
12. You can select a storage account where the vhd file is stored. For this tutorial, useUse automatically generated storage account.
13. InRegion/affinity group/virtual network, SelectWest usThe location of the VM.
14. Click the arrow to continue.
15 if you connect to another machine or add a machine to the virtual network, you can use the options on this page. You do not need to create an availability set or connect to a virtual network. Click the check box to create a virtual machine.
Create a virtual machine and configure the operating system. After creating a virtual machine, you will see the new virtual machine listed in the running status in Windows azure Management Portal.
It's as simple as I mentioned above, and it takes five minutes in total.
I'm glad to see Microsoft keep its promise to open the project source code and open windows azure to Linux. Microsoft not only opens the driver source code, but also contributes to the upstream kernel project so that people can run Linux on their virtual machine management programs and platforms. They also developed open-source tools, developers can use it to interact with the platform. Run the drivers on GitHub and codeplex. You can also find the source code and instructions for building.
For a summary of how this work is useful to customers of centos and Windows Azure, see my interview with Steven grandchamp, Chief Executive Officer of openlogic on the Microsoft openness blog. Start centos images running openlogic as part of the current virtual machines preview. For more information, see Windows azure site.
