Windows Installer can use logging to help solve problems encountered during installation of software packages. Enable this logging by adding an entry and a value to the Registry. After you add and enable an item, you can retry the problematic installation. The Windows Installer tracks the installation progress and sends the progress to the temp folder. The new log file name is random, but starts with the letter "Msi" and ends with the. log extension. To find the location of the temp folder, type the following at the command prompt:

Cd % Temp %

How to back up and restore the Registry in Windows

Enable Windows Installer Logging

To enable Windows Installer logging, use regedit.exe to open the registry and create the following paths and items:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Installer

REG_SZ: Log
Value: voicewarmupx

The alphabetic order in the value field is optional. Each letter can enable a different logging mode. For MSI Version 1.1, the actual function of each letter is as follows:

V-Detailed output
O-insufficient disk space message
I-status message
C-initial UI Parameters
E-all error messages
W-non-fatal warning
A-Start Operation
R-operation-specific records
M-out of memory or fatal Exit message
U-user request
P-terminal attributes
+-After attaching to an existing file
! -Refresh each line to the log
X-Other debugging information. The "X" flag can only be used on Windows Server 2003 and later operating systems, MSI redistributable version 3.0, and MSI redistributable Versions later.
"*"-Wildcard, which records all information except V and X. To include the V and X options, specify "/L * VX ".

Note:This situation can only be used for troubleshooting and should not be retained because it may adversely affect system performance and disk space. Each time you use the "Add/delete programs" tool in the "control panel", a new MSI *. log file is created.

Enable Windows Installer Logging through group policy

You can enable logging through the Group Policy by editing the corresponding ou or directory group policy. Under Group Policy, expand "Computer Configuration", "management template", and "Windows components", and then select "Windows Installer ".
Double-click"Logging"And then click"Enabled". In"Logging"Enter the option you want to record. The log file MSI. Log appears in the temp folder of the system volume.
For more information about MSI log records, see Windows Help. To do this, use the phrase "Msi log record" to search and select "Managing options for computers through group policy" (Manage computers using group policies ).
Note:The "X" flag can be added locally on Windows Server 2003 and later operating systems, MSI redistributable version 3.0, and MSI redistributable Versions later.
