How to encrypt the NTFS file system

NTFS is an abbreviation for NTFILESYSTEM (NTFS file system), providing long filenames, data protection and recovery, and security through directory and file licensing. NTFS supports large hard disks and stores files (known as volumes) on multiple hard disks. To encrypt files and folders with NTFS, we want to keep the following information in mind:

1. Only files or folders on NTFS volumes can be encrypted.
2. Unable to encrypt compressed files or folders. If a user encrypts a compressed file or folder, the file or folder will be unzipped.
3. If the encrypted file is copied or moved to a non-NTFS-formatted volume, the file will be decrypted.
4. If you move non-encrypted files to an encrypted folder, the files will be automatically encrypted in the new folder. However, the reverse operation does not automatically decrypt the file file that must be explicitly decrypted.
5. Files marked as "System" properties cannot be encrypted, and files located in the systemroot directory structure cannot be encrypted.
6. Encrypting folders or files does not prevent the deletion or listing of files or directories. People with appropriate permissions can delete or list encrypted folders or files. Therefore, it is recommended that you use EFS with NTFS permissions.
7. Files and folders can be encrypted or decrypted on remote computers that allow remote encryption. However, if you open an encrypted file over a network, the data that is transmitted over the network through this process is not encrypted. You must encrypt data over the wire using other protocols such as SSL/TLS (Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security) or Internet Protocol security (IPSEC). However, WebDAV can encrypt files locally and send them in an encrypted format.

I. Protect files with an encrypted file system

1, through the Resource Manager encryption and decryption, to encrypt the folder or file, you can follow the following steps:
(1) Open Explorer or My computer and locate the files and folders you want to encrypt.
(2) Right-click the file or folder and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
(3) In the General tab, click the Advanced button to display the Advanced Properties dialog box.
(4) Select the Encrypt contents to protect data check box, click the OK button, and then click the OK button or the Apply button, and the Pop-up dialog box clicks OK.

There are two options for changing the dialog box, which have the following meanings:

(1) Apply changes only to this folder: Only the folder is encrypted and its subfolders and files are not encrypted.

(2) Apply changes to the folder, subfolders, and files: Not only does the folder be encrypted, it also encrypts all of its subfolders and files.
