Hello everyone! I am delighted to be at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Just entered your school gate, under the leadership of President Gan and several teachers, I visited the building here. After reading, feel very kind, why? Because the style and color of the building here are very similar to our temples. It is said that it is a copy of the architectural model of Cambridge and Oxford, with the breath of the industrial revolution, a sense of openness and inclusiveness, and an indication of the humanistic spirit of the university.

Buddhism often say "all the causes of life, the laws of the cause of the death," the world also like to say "the fate of thousands of miles to meet, no strangers to the opposite", so we can meet here, not without reason. This kind of karma should originate from the faith and admiration of the teachers and students in Buddhism, so it derives the theme of today's exchange-"How to face the pain".

Pain is the word that we all are not unfamiliar with. In this world, the pain is much more. Although I myself have not been out of pain, to give you talk is not necessarily appropriate, but after all, I have been interested in the Dharma since childhood, for many years, in the knowledge of good, in learning, research, practice and over a kung fu, so from a certain level, can also be a simple report on their own experience.

I. Classification of human suffering

In the six lanes of the three realms, there are more categories of pain. For us human beings, there are hard, bad, bitter, the three fundamental suffering, as well as life, old, sick, dead, beg, love parting, hatred, five yin flaming, such as eight big branches of suffering.

The great scholar of India, Holy Heavens, also put human suffering into two kinds: the body bitter and bitter. such as Ode to the Cloud: "The winner for the bitter, the poor from the body, that is, the two bitter, day and day bad world." It means that the pain of the superior person is the suffering of the psychological, such as work pressure, competition worry, "High place is cold" bitterness, etc., the pain of the little man, is the suffering of the body, such as deprived, super strength labor and so on. By this two kinds of pain, constant time constantly to annoy the mortal beings. Therefore, the world's rich also pain, no money is also painful.

In the past, many people thought that the money will bring happiness, but later had the money only then discovered, the happiness did not arrive as scheduled, the pain but instead emerges endlessly. In this case, the Gallup poll in the United States used the data to prove that: according to 100, Chinese consumers in 1994, The happiness index is 69 points, 1997 highest, to 71 points, ten years later, 2004 years fell to 67 points. What does that mean? In the past 10 years, with the continuous development of the economy, people are just beginning to feel very happy, but soon after, the happiness index is declining, and finally less than when the money is happy.

Not to mention the world, just China, it is estimated that 287,000 people die each year by suicide, 2 million suicide attempts, equivalent to every two minutes a person killed himself. As can be seen, many people now wear beautifully and look happy, but in fact, they have been in the heart of a lot of pain forced, overwhelmed.

Second, the understanding of the three realms is a painful nature

However, living in a life, too much joy is inevitable. If you do not believe, you can look at the "Meso 400" of the first eight products, which is dedicated to the secular truth in the various pain. After reading, you will understand that life is everywhere, as the Buddha in the "Fa Hua Jing" in the Cloud: "Three realms without an Ann, like a fire house." ”

Of course, some people may disagree: "Who says life is bitter?" I was happy. "Before there was a special love to drink people, told me:" You talk about Samsara pain, in fact, not bitter, I drink very comfortable every day. "But the joy that you generate after you are drunk is an upside-down consciousness of insanity that is not really happy at all."

DARRINM, American historian Professor Darling. McMahon), wrote a book called "The History of Happiness." He spent six years, quoting a lot of historical data, to study the human happiness in the end what is it? What can bring us happiness? What conclusion does he have in the end? As in the myth of the Chalice of Christ's blood, the ultimate happiness may only exist in our imagination. In other words, true happiness is not to be. This view, it can be said with Buddhism in the "three Realms without Ann" coincides with.

Therefore, life is already full of pain, this point we must realize. Otherwise, many people, even some Buddhists, encounter a bit of frustration on the blame, complaining that God is not fair, "Why I so unlucky, all the misfortune fell on my head", but do not know the nature of reincarnation is so.

Some people think: "Reincarnation is not all pain, there should be some happiness." "The words are good, but in fact, these pleasures are temporary, impermanent, and can become painful at any time." Therefore, our happiness, like a small white spot on a blue, only occasionally embellishment, but not the background of life.

In addition, some people believe that happiness exists in the senses, such as physical contact, pleasant sound, beautiful things, which can bring happiness. But this kind of happiness is particularly superficial and sometimes can be obtained through drugs. True happiness, in fact from the heart, to be happy from the bitter, we must start from the heart, with the medicine of Mahayana Buddhism, the root of the total extraction of pain.

Iii. different ways in which people relieve their pain

So, how to remove the pain specifically?

1 , the inferior way of the world


    First of all, let's talk about the wrong way of human suffering in the world. Some people are desperate to drink, smoke, and take drugs when they are particularly miserable. I knew a Buddhist, and he said his cigarettes and wine could not be stopped, why? Because he is very upset, he will hide in the coffee shop to smoke, and then go to the ballroom to drown his sorrows. He thought a drunk can solve thousand sorrow, but really can this? Not so. This will only make oneself more and more worried, once sober, things still have to face, want to hide also can not escape.

    Some people, in a bad mood to go to the evil, or to karaoke, or play mahjong, booze, these are undoubtedly a kind of escape.
    Some people, write all the pain on paper, then burn it, look at the words on the paper a little bit of ashes, and feel the pain disappear. But this is tantamount to superstition, and it doesn't make much sense.
    Some people, shouting in the valley, or banging their heads against the wall, even smashing the pots and pans all over the house, to vent a generalist feel relaxed.
    What's more, it's fun to kill. Not long ago in the United States, a 17-year-old child killed his parents. In the case of parents still in the room, through Facebook invited 40 to 60 teenagers to come home and drink all night to binge.

Or, some people after the lovelorn, either suicide, or kill the lover, if you can not find a lover, look for someone similar to replace. I heard that there is a college students, because of their lovelorn, the special kill some in red clothes, long hair shawl female students, in order to revenge the former girlfriend of his ruthless abandon.

2 , medium-sized ways of the world
A slightly better person, in the face of pain, will be sightseeing, or find intelligent people to chat, or make some psychological counseling, or see "Chicken Soup of the Soul" and other inspirational books.

"Chicken Soup of the Soul" is written by an American, a few years ago a more sensational, there is a lot of philosophical stories, look at the time is more comfortable, but after reading, not like Buddhism as there is a special deep-rooted tactic, can eradicate their own troubles. But it's also a way of doing it.

Through these methods, like eating a painkiller, you can temporarily suppress the pain, so that it no longer tortured themselves. But it is not a cure, but the best way to solve the problem is to learn Buddha.

3 , the most victorious Buddhist method
Therefore, I would like to share with you the Dharma I know today, and through these methods, it is easy to eliminate the pain inside. Even if some habits are deep-rooted, can not be completely cut off at once, but as long as the persistence of constant string learning, the pain will sooner or later leave you.

What way? Here are a few examples:

1) interests of all sentient beings, to remove self-interest
when you are particularly miserable, first realize that the source of pain is my self-centered heart. I believe it is clear to you that once you are in distress, there should be few pain for all sentient beings, and there will be a lot of pain for yourself. Therefore, in order to break down all the pain, we must first cut off its source, and to sever its source, we should learn some Buddhist sutra, with the Mahayana spirit of the non-Self to change the attitude of selfishness.

There have been many such people, just beginning because of a variety of things particularly distress, but later learned the Mahayana Dharma, often do something conducive to sentient beings, such as charity, volunteer work, the original pain disappeared unconsciously. Therefore, the first way to break the pain is to benefit sentient beings. If you have Mahayana compassion, Bodhi Heart, that is better, but even if not, at least should have a benevolent traditional morals, it is also one of the elixir to save mankind.

1988There were 75 Nobel laureates who held a historic meeting in Paris, France, to discuss the development of science and the problems faced by mankind in the 21st century. Finally, they jointly issued a declaration: "If humanity is to survive in the 21st century, must go back to 2,500 years to learn the wisdom of Confucius!" "

However, it is regrettable that foreign countries have great hopes for Chinese culture, but this time China, Confucius and Mencius thought was unprecedented destruction. Remember when I was a child, probably in 1974, the whole country launched a "batch of forest hole" movement. In order to avoid denying the "cultural revolution" and fearing that some people should revert to anti with Confucianism, gang of four interrogates Confucius ' thought. Although the campaign ended in less than half a year, its aftermath was rather serious. Since then, China's traditional culture has been down, even now many people want to turn the tide, but it is like a dying patient, want to fully recover is very difficult.

yesterday at the Chinese University Seminar, I saw a lot of young people, in addition to Buddhism interested in the promotion of traditional culture also have certain enthusiasm. Why is it? Because these traditional cultures are now being praise in other countries, and in their own countries, they have been neglected. Like "filial piety", "respect teachers", this aspect of the virtues are often invisible. Many teachers themselves have not received this kind of education, want to teach students is too hard. In this way, what kind of education do these students grow in, and how will their next generation be affected?

Therefore, our present education content, needs to be perfected repeatedly, cannot pursue only one score is enough. Nowadays, the criteria for admission to colleges and universities are only the high and low grades. In fact, it is not important for a person to test how many points, his personality to decide everything. Some people, even if they are smart, but their personalities are particularly poor, will not be beneficial to the society and railroads. Therefore, the cultivation of talent must be "Germany" in the first place.

I have met some college students, there is no connotation in the belly, but arrogant heart is as big as the Mountain King, the attitude of Buddhism very contempt, and repeatedly criticized. In fact, Buddhism is not afraid of criticism, it reveals the truth can withstand any observation. But if you do not know anything about Buddhism, it is out of context and out of the open, this can only expose their shallow ignorance, the Buddhist does not pose any harm.

Therefore, education must teach students how to be a man, to train both political and moral talents. In ancient China, whether a person can be reused, not only to see his knowledge, but also to observe his virtues. If the others are noble and desirable, even if the knowledge is not very high, it will be entrusted with the task, conversely, if he does not have the heart of mercy, although Caigaobadou, educated player, or proficient in the Buddhist Sanzang 12, is not necessarily beneficial to the world.

Therefore, we must understand the importance of "virtue". Now the United Nations Headquarters in the building, there is a sentence of Confucius: "Do unto others, come back haunting." "However, many people do not understand this truth?" When you are threatened by life, often afraid, and the animals you eat every day, they are not so? Therefore, to break apart from self-interest, the interests of sentient beings, and not verbally said that they can really do, this needs to be observed in many ways. Of course, if you do, you will surely break all kinds of pain.

2) The bitter music is converted into the Tao
When we have a lot of pain, there is another way in Buddhism that can turn it into a word. That is, the thing itself is a pain, but you can use it instead of pain.

For example, without a bodhisattva in the song of Happiness, we can also be sick, not sick or can be: sick, so as to eliminate many karma in the past, if not sick, with this healthy body can do more good deeds. We can not have money, money can also: if there is no money, you can cut off the addiction to property; Some families have no greed for money, naturally there is a lot of money, then you do not have to be particularly distressed: "Rich, I do ah!" Buddha in the "Schneier," said, if you live in the blessing of a large, this life does not need to do a lot of money, even if it is a monk, the housing value of 500 of dollars, is also allowed to wear clothes worth 100 million of money, is also possible . So, no matter what happens, the bitterness is good, the joy, we should all be happy.

In fact, if a person wants to achieve success and glory, experience all kinds of pain is also necessary. Einstein said: "There is only one channel to the true greatness of mankind-the path of misery." "Therefore, the truly wise man will not fear the pain at all, but would transform every ordeal in life into the cornerstone of liberation."

There was a story about this: Once Upon a while, a farmer's donkey fell into the dry well. Farmers in the wellhead rushed round, is no way to save it out. Finally the farmer decided: This donkey is already old, this mouth dry well also should fill up, not worth spending too much energy to save donkey. So he invited all the neighbours and began to fill the well.

    the donkey soon realized what had happened, and at first, it was panicking loudly in the well. In a moment, it was puzzling that it was quiet. The farmer could not help but look at the bottom of the hole, the scene shocked him: every shovel hit the donkey on the back of the Earth, it is quickly shake off, and then mercilessly with the foot tightly. In this way, not long before, the donkey unexpectedly raised himself to the wellhead, in the eyes of all surprised, jumped out, quickly ran away ...

    In fact, life is the same. Even though many pains have come upon us as dust, we should shake it all down, and tread heavily on our feet, and not be buried by these pains. If so, in the end, we will be like the donkey fled the dry well, from the cycle of the abyss of the complete escape.

    on the way to turn the pain into a way, the karma of Tibetan Buddhism speaks a lot. I had a classmate who was a good student, he was a leader, and when he was running for a job, he didn't seem to have any problem with him. The person next to see all anxious, persuade him hurriedly to do the work. He replied: "Nothing." In case the election is also very good, I happen to have the opportunity to study in the course, if the choice is also very good, can have more opportunities to benefit sentient beings. No matter what the result, I am very happy.

    Unfortunately, now many people do not understand this truth, often lost, think this can not, that does not, and sometimes the shun edge has become a violation. If you can look at the problem in a different way, then what is wrong can become the margin, which is called the pain into the Tao. Beethoven (Ludwigvan beethoven,1770-1827) also said: "The most outstanding people, always with pain in exchange for joy." "

3 ) The practice was exchanged from him
It is also helpful to remove the pain from his exchange. For example, when you are seriously ill in bed, damaged in reputation, and destitute, you can make a vow: "There are many sentient beings in samsara who feel such pain, and may all their sufferings be matured in me." "Then when you exhale outward, think of all your happiness, as if you take off your clothes and give them all to them, and when you inhale inward, then you think of all the sufferings of all sentient beings in the body, and bear them, so that they are all from the bitter joy."

This is a very deep spiritual teaching in Mahayana Buddhism. When we are suffering, if we can meditate regularly, the pain will be valuable, and the love of the ego will be reduced gradually.

4) facing the concept of voidness
If you have free sex, this is the best thing to do, so you can fundamentally solve the problem. Why is it? Because all of our suffering, are from the separate reading, and the separate reading can rely on the void to see broken apart. The holy days of the teacher in the "400 theory" also said: "False respectively tied, evidence empty see can divide." "

Of course, the so-called emptiness, not necessarily a Buddha-like state of enlightenment, but at least also to "all the law is empty" a little understanding, so, I hope you learn more "meso-fundamental Wisdom", "400 theory". In particular, some young people, converted to Buddhism for more than 10 years, the Buddhist truth is not a good idea, just casually read a few books, so that is not necessarily a veritable Buddhist.

today Buddhists have two misconceptions: one is that many intellectuals study Buddhism, not like the monks of Tibetan monasteries, who spend a lot of time arguing and practising, but think that the title of a master of Buddhism and a doctorate can be taken. In this way, their understanding of Buddhism is rather superficial, and many of the essays written are of little real significance, but their inner arrogance is growing. Second, some believers are more superstitious, seeking empowerment and support everywhere, thinking that there is a shortcut to liberation.

In fact, as a Buddhist, if you want to really go deep into Buddhism, we must take a step-by-step, steadfast study. Now the world's compulsory education is nine years, after reading is only a junior high school graduation, then the profound Buddhist, it is more impossible to use a short time access. You know, Buddhism is far more than any knowledge of the world, if you do not study systematically, just to do a conversion certificate, to seek an empowerment, claiming to be a Buddhist, this is only a superficial, Sodom.

Therefore, Buddhism is not as simple as some people think, it is necessary to practice, but also to practising, both indispensable. Just now I talked with President Gan, we all have a consensus: for Buddhism, only theoretical research and not, but also practical practice, but blind repair is not possible, but also to have a theoretical basis, both, anyone deserves the next kung Fu.

In other words, just now, if you want to eliminate your own pain, you have to understand the emptiness, practising some of the truth. Especially like the "meso-fundamental Hui theory", after learning, it will be absolutely helpful to you. That will Fuffa in the world, is the author of this theory-Dragon Meng Bodhisattva. I have seen a lot of books in the world before, but after seeing it, I can certainly give the Buddha the confidence of not returning.

Therefore, if you want to understand the emptiness, it is best to start from the "Meso-fundamental wisdom". The first sentence at the beginning of this theory is: "Neither life nor death, not often and constantly, is not different, and does not come nor go." Can say is the cause, the good and the drama theory, I Shong Buddha, all said in the first. In just a few words, the truth of the law is revealed to the fullest. Whether it is the nature of our hearts, the nature of pain, or the nature of the external law, it is true that it is deathless, not constant, different, not coming. In this respect, Dragon Meng Bodhisattva from the first product to 27 products, carried out one after the analysis, any scientist can not refute.

A professor at the Chinese university yesterday asked me, "tell some Buddhist stories to current college students, they don't believe what to do?" "I said:" Don't tell a story, otherwise, they are accustomed to the myth, to see the animation, it is easy to take the Buddhist story as these. If we want to guide them to know Buddhism, we must start from the perspective and the Ming, first to destroy their arrogance, and then tell these stories, they can realize the greatness of Buddhism. "

"The Master of Buddhism has been waiting a long time for the scientists to climb to the top of the mountain." Of course, some Buddhists do not understand this, it is only his personal problem, not the fault of Buddhism.

In particular, the emptiness of Buddhism, through the analysis of "I" does not exist, can completely break apart all the pain. How to break apart? As we all know, feeling the pain of "I" and the suffering is a kind of mutual view of the relationship, left the accesses than either, the other accesses than either must not exist. "The middle Theory" also said: "Away from the law, what is anyone?" How do you get away from people? "Now some people suffer badly every day, but where is the painful" me "? Where is the pain that is being suffered? Through the meso-nyaya observation, finally will know that the pain does not exist, but it is their own false differences.

Therefore, if we do not have the awareness of the emptiness, it is easy to chase the name of profit, the various kinds of false addiction to the real. Once you can be like a lot of monks in Germany, depending on the emptiness of my hold, all the pain will vanish, the realm of enlightenment will bring you unspeakable happiness.

5) The practice of tolerance
when we feel the pain, we can also fix the patience. Ann Endure, is the world people say strong, with its words, face pain will not easily yield.

like President Lincoln of the United States (abrahamlincoln,1809-1865), he has faced frustration all his life: Eight campaigns, eight defeats,two times in business, two failures,I even had a nervous breakdown once. Many times he could have given up, but he didn't do it. And because of this strength, he became one of the greatest presidents in American history.

Also, the famous American blind deaf woman writer Helen Keller (Helen Keller 1880-1968), also used her strong life, to create an incredible miracle.

Madame Curie (mariasklodowska-curie,1867-1934) once said, "My supreme principle is: never give in to any difficulty." Her biography also records that she was very poor when she was studying, and she experienced a lot of hard-to-bear ascetic experiences. Because of malnutrition, she fainted again and again, when the cold days no quilt, had to put all the clothes are covered on the body, and finally cold to the Chair also pressed to the body for warmth.

in the history of Tibetan Buddhism, there was a great patriarch called Ronchimba. When he practiced in Mulberry, life was very poor. All his possessions were a calf pocket, and when it snowed, he got into the calf pocket. This pocket is not only his quilt, cushion, but also his only clothes.

referring to "the only clothes", I thought of a young fox in the video, saying: "I have a beautiful dress, all year round wearing body." All my life, only such a dress, is my mother gave me the time, I wear it every day, and sleep at night do not take off. Man, my clothes are only one, and your closet is full and full. My clothes are my fur, my fur is lost, and I am only flesh and blood. Your clothes can be changed three a day, my clothes off, I will die Jiuquan. "

Indeed, if humans do not wear animal skins, there are actually many clothes to wear, and if you do not eat animal meat, there are plenty of vegetables to eat. Some people do not feel anything to eat a piece of meat, but have you ever thought that this animal only this piece of meat, if you eat, it will die? There are many animal protection organizations in the western countries, although not many of us here, but it is best for everyone to start from their own, and really care about all the animals. For example, you have a special love of meat before, try to eat less, this is a kind of "endure."

6 ) Meppenenpoche's "Happy Method"
There is also a practice in Tibetan Buddhism that can eliminate the pain in our daily lives and keep us in a good mood.

the method is very simple: first binocular look straight into the void, not clinging to all and natural relaxation, the heart as much as possible, in such a state of calm. Then he recited "Zom Lenadeca Soha Village", which was read 7 times and 108 times. So view repair, help us every day good mood, interpersonal relations tend to improve, a lot of not smooth solved.

This practice, I also fixed a period of time, the effect is really very good. Of course, you do not have the confidence, the effect is not necessarily obvious, after all, to repair any law, confidence is particularly critical. Some people think that this is irrational, in fact, if you are too rational, many deep areas are difficult to get involved in, and too emotional, it is also an extreme. Some people who engage in academic research, the "faith", "plus" all negative, a mention of the scorn, in addition to their own separate reading, nothing to believe, and some people are too blind superstition, the theory never to study, this is also unreasonable. Therefore, if you want to know the truth of the world, we should live in the middle road, not falling on both sides.

just now the method can let us enlarge the mind, if you look at the problem from a different perspective, you will not die in a bit. There used to be a painter who drew a black spot on a white paper and put it in a picture frame. Many people look at the controversy, consensus, do not know what this represents. In fact, its meaning is very profound: sentient beings clinging to one o'clock, tend to ignore a lot of, completely unaware there is a large space.

For example, you have been scolded and slandered today ,may have been brooding, lunch can not eat, or your father died, feelings encountered setbacks, feel sundering, darkening. In fact, in this world, there are still many things can bring happiness, but if you only cling to this point, around the black dots round, no large tracts of white paper, you will feel very painful, difficult to let go.

originally I know a person, because the family had a problem, she did not want to live, so in Chengdu wrapped a car, ran to the Rangtang Prairie. The prairie is particularly broad, more than 10 kilometers can not see the side, she got off the car, sent the driver to go, there shouted loudly, vent the pain inside. The result shouted, she looked at the sky boundless, grassland so broad, the heart also with the cheerful up. She felt like a little ant, desperately clinging to a small nest, what is the point? Having understood this, she laid down the moment, and the pain vanished. Therefore, the inner attachment is the source of all the pain, once the attachment, the pain will no longer bind themselves.

for the pain, many great achievements of the ages have not been regarded as the same thing. In the "theory of the profession" also said, this thing still has a turn, you needn't pain, no turn, that pain also useless. This is very good, such as your parents died, if there is a way to let them live, then you do not have to suffer, if you are unable to turn back, you cry again what is the use? But the people who can really think about it now may not have a few.

of course, I do not mean that I am such a person, in the life of anything can be frankly face. But I have learned the Mahayana Dharma for a long time, and now I see my family dead, totally different from my previous mentality. This, in front of you so many people, I will not say lying. Therefore, I hope that when we encounter pain, it is best to find a way out of the Dharma, there is no need to commit suicide, or drugs, eating shielding content. These messy things, eat bad for your health, do not try to escape in this way, but should read some Buddhist books, listen to some real monks to open the show, in-depth understanding of the meaning of Buddhism, so as to the root causes, not the symptoms.

now many people also have this experience: originally did not learn Buddha, do a lot of things very boring. But after learning the Buddha, just understand why people live, to solve a lot of real problems, the heart also felt happy. All this is money can not bring.

There are many teachers and classmates here, and perhaps there is a Buddha-Bodhisattva's present.
