Line spacing determines the vertical distance between lines of text in a paragraph.
Paragraph spacing determines the space above and below the paragraph.
By default, the lines are single spacing, and the spacing between each segment is slightly larger.
If you want to reuse the set spacing or line spacing, you can create a style. For more information about creating styles for reuse formats, see new Quick Styles.
Change row spacing
If a row contains large characters, graphics, or formulas, Microsoft Office Word increases the line spacing.
To evenly distribute the lines in a paragraph, use the exact spacing and specify a large enough space to accommodate the largest character or graphic in the row. If the item appears incomplete, increase the spacing.
Select the paragraph for which you want to change the row spacing.
On the Start tab, in the Paragraph group, click Line Spacing.
Do one of the following:
To apply the new settings, click the number that corresponds to the line spacing you want.
For example, if you click 2.0, the selected text will take double spacing.
To set a more precise spacing unit of measurement, click Line Spacing Options, and then under Spacing, select the options that you want.
Line Spacing Options
Single spacing This option sets the line spacing to the height of the maximum font for the row plus a small amount of extra spacing. The size of the extra spacing depends on the font used.
1.5 Times-fold spacing this option is 1.5 times times the single spacing.
Double spacing This option is twice times the single spacing.
Minimum this option sets the minimum spacing required to accommodate the largest font or graphic on the line.
Fixed this option to set the fixed line spacing and Microsoft Office Word cannot adjust line spacing.
Multiple spacing This option setting increases or decreases line spacing by a specified percentage. For example, setting the line spacing to 1.2 increases by 20% on a single spacing basis.
Change the spacing before or after a paragraph
By default, the spacing after a paragraph is slightly larger.
Select the paragraph that you want to change the spacing before or after the paragraph.
On the Page Layout tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to paragraph spacing or spacing after paragraph, and then enter the spacing that you want.
