How to disable ping response under Linux:
Echo 1 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all
If you want to disable ping response as soon as you boot, add the above statement to/etc/rc.d/rc.local.

If you want to resume using the ping command, you can enter:
echo 0〉/proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_igore_all command.
