How to install Linux on MacBook Pro Retina

MacBook Pros has very powerful configuration, but some people want to strengthen, they want to use the Linux system.

Whether you want a more open and personalized operating system or you only want to use some software specific to Linux, you will want to install Linux on your MacBook. It's a pity that the MacBook Pro is a piece of hard-pressed bricks, making it impossible for you to install other systems. Linux, in particular, is more difficult than installing Windows on a MacBook. Boot Camp is useless for Linux. Even so, it does not mean that you cannot do it at all!

Why is Linux installed on MacBook Pro Retina?

Isn't a MacBook just for OS X? Why install Linux? In fact, the reason for purchasing a MacBook is not only because of its operating system, its ultimate hardware performance, its ultra-long battery life, and its anti-operation resistance. These good hardware, coupled with a clear Retina screen that allows you to experience the hiddpi, are not all the reasons for buying?

However, if you do not like OS X or you really want to use Linux, why not plug this free, open-source, small, and personalized Linux into your tall hardware? Apple may have something to say, but who cares ~

Note: In this tutorial, we will use the most popular Linux release-Ubuntu as our Installation option. You can also use the Linux release version you want to use, but the related steps will be slightly different from this tutorial. If you break down your system, we will not assume any responsibility. This tutorial will teach you how to start both Linux and OS x. In addition, you can upgrade the firmware only on OS x. Therefore, we recommend that you do not delete OS X.

But before we start, please back up your computer using your favorite method (such as Time Machine or CrashPlan), just in case.

Download Ubuntu

First, you need to download an Ubuntu Desktop installation image. Be sure to select the 64-bit desktop version, although this image is not provided for Mac. This image can be started in both BIOS and EFI modes, while Mac images can only be started in BIOS. Mac is specially designed to do this, but we need to enable it in EFI mode.

Next, find a 2 GB or more USB, we will use this USB as the Ubuntu Installation Boot Disk. You can follow the steps officially guided by Ubuntu or use a dedicated graphical tool to prepare the installation disk.

Adjust partition size

After you finish the previous step, your Mac Book Pro will be ready for installation. Open the Disk Utility (Disk tool), click Select your hard Disk on the left, and select the partition tab. Scale down the Mac partition to your desired size-we will use the newly created available space to install Ubuntu.
