The following tutorial guides Linuxer to install SteamOS GNU/Linux in VirtualBox.

As you already know, SteamOS Linux was officially released on July 15, December 13. As a Debian GNU/Linux-based operating system, it uses GNOME as the desktop environment by default. Of course, this is optional.

If there is no problem with the hardware, for example, if your computer has a powerful game graphics card and supports UEFI, it is very easy to install SteamOS. However, because Valve has not released the SteamOS ISO image, it may not be so smooth during installation.

The following tutorial consists of two important parts. The first part will help you create an ISO Image Using Valve's official SteamOSInstaller.zip. If you do not want to install it on your computer, the second part will show you how to experience SteamOS in VirtualBox.

At the beginning, you need a new VirtualBox that has been correctly installed. Of course, you also need a software called GNUxorriso to create an ISO image.

Step 1: Create a SteamISO Image

Download SteamOSInstaller.zip from Softpedia, save it to your home directory, and decompress it. Then you will see the SteamOSInstaller folder. Open it from the terminal and execute the following command ):

Xorriso-as mkisofs-r-checksum_algorithm_iso md5, sha1-V 'steam OS '-o ~ /SteamOSInstaller. iso-J-joliet-long-cache-inodes-no-emul-boot-load-size 4-boot-info-table-eltorito-alt-boot -- efi-boot boot/grub/efi. img-append_partition 2 0x01 ~ /SteamOSInstaller/boot/grub/efi. img-partition_offset 16 ~ /SteamOSInstaller

After a few seconds, the SteamOS. iso file will appear in your home directory, which is about 1 GB. Now, this step is complete. Next, go to step 2.

Step 2: Install SteamOS in VirtualBox

If you have correctly installed VirtualBox and understood its usage, we need to create a new Virtual Machine with UEFI support. In the main window of VirtualBox, click New to start installation.

In the Name box, enter SteamOS, select Linux as the operating system type, select Debain 64-bit from the version list in the drop-down box, and click Next to continue. In Memory Size, set 1024 or 2048 MB (of course, this depends on the actual Memory Size of your computer). We create a virtual hard disk drive in VDI format and fix the Size to 15 GB. Click "Continue" to Continue and wait until the creation process ends.

Create a new Virtual Machine

Set memory size

Now that our virtual machine has been created, let's make some minor adjustments for SteamOS. Go to the Settings option, click System on the sidebar, deselect "Floppy" in Boot Order, and check whether the "Enable EFI (special OSes only)" option is selected.

Allow EFI and remove Floppy

Next, click the Display button in the sidebar, set Video Memory to 128 MB, and check the "Enable 3D Acceleration" option. Then, go to the Storage section in the sidebar, click "Empty" under "Controller: IDE", and click the CD icon next to the CD/DVD Driver drop-down bar to add the SteamOSInstall created in the previous step. iso image file. After everything is complete, click OK.

Set Video Memory size and 3D Acceleration

Now, let's press the "Start" button in the main window to Start the VM. You will immediately see the SteamOS startup screen. You only need to highlight "automatically install (will erase disk)" and press Enter. Next, let's take a rest until our installation is complete. The entire installation process may take some time, depending on your computer.

The SteamOS operating system can be downloaded and installed.
