How to recover the switch password

As a basic component of network, the switch is one of the most common equipments of network, and its security has become the primary concern of many engineers and network administrators.

A switch is a network device that must be used in a unit local area network.

I work unit local area network use 15 Cisco Catalyst2950 switch. Management of the switch is an important responsibility of network administrators, in order to improve the security of the network, the switch password for network management is very important, once forgotten password will cause significant loss to the administrator.

This article takes Catalyst2950, Catalyst1900 series switches as an example to explain how to recover the switch password.

First, Catalyst 2950 series Switch password recovery

1. Establish a physical connection to the PC to the router, using the RS232 console line (with the switch belt) to connect the Router console interface and the PC's COM port.

2. Use HyperTerminal on your computer: Open start-Programs-attachments-communications-HyperTerminal-New HyperTerminal, first set the name for the new connection.

Then, set the connection with the port, generally choose COM1.

Then set the connection parameters, click the "Revert to Defaults" button, set the parameters as follows: Bits per second is 9600, data bits are 8, parity is zero, stop bit is 1, data flow control is none.

3. Open the switch power supply, the power-on 30 seconds, hold down the switch front panel to the left of the mode key.

4. Enter boot mode, show 3 options, enter "Flash_init" command, start to initialize Flash.

5. Enter the "Load_helper" command to perform the "Dir Flash:" Command.

6. Execute rename flash:config.text flash:config.old command to rename the configuration file containing password.

7. Execute the boot command to start the switch, which has a slightly longer execution time.

In the presence of "Would" to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]: "When, enter" no ".

The Enable command is then entered into the switch privilege mode to perform Switch#rename flash:config.old flash:config.text.

8. Perform copy Flash:config.text System:running-config, which is a copy of the configuration file to the current system, that is, restore the original switch configuration.

9. Use the Enable password or enable secret command to reset the password.

10. Use the Write memory command to save the configuration, reboot the switch, all OK.

Second, Catalyst1900 series switch password recovery

Connect your computer to the switch first and use HyperTerminal.

Then, within 30 seconds, hold down the mode key and restore the configuration to the factory value as prompted by the system.

Then enter the boot mode and enter or execute the related command in turn. Finally, use the Enable command to reset the password, save the configuration, restart it. There is no more to be said here.
