How to set the default mode for layer-3 Switch Gateway

The contact with the vswitch has been around for a while, and you may find that some content is getting confused. For example, if the vswitch configures the default gateway, the specific configuration commands are quite familiar, but now I don't quite understand why I want to complete the switch gateway settings. I also found some information on the Internet, some for remote access to the switch, and some for communication between different networks!

I hope all network experts will give you some advice on how to configure the default gateway on the vswitch, how to configure the gateway, and finally some instances. Thank you. To facilitate remote logon to a L2 Switch through Telnet, You can remotely configure and manage the switch.

To use Telnet to log on to the vswitch, The vswitch must have an IP address. The port of the Second-layer switch cannot be set with an IP address. However, because the vswitch has a VLAN1 interface by default, VLAN interfaces can be configured with IP addresses. Therefore, for L2 switches, the management address is the IP address of the VLAN1 interface.

The vswitch gateway configuration method is as follows:

Switch#config t

Switch(config)#interface vlan 1

Switch(config-if)#ip address 192.168.1.254 255.255.255.0

Switch(config-if)#no shutdown

Switch(config-if)#exit

Switch(config)#

After a L2 Switch is configured with a management IP address, you can use "Telnet 192.168.1.254" to log on to the vswitch within the same network segment of the Management IP address. To log on to a L2 Switch connected to another CIDR Block across different CIDR blocks, you must specify the default gateway for the L2 Switch configuration. Both L2 switches must specify the default gateway address. Use the ip default-gateway command to configure the default gateway address of the specified switch. For example, to configure the default gateway address as 192.168.1.1, set the switch gateway command:

Switch (config) # ip default-gateway 192.168.1.1

Switch (config) # exit

Switch # write

For a layer-3 switch, you do not need to configure the management address and default gateway address. You can use the IP address of any layer-3 interface on the layer-3 Switch to remotely log on. For communications between different networks, you must set an address for forwarding data packets. This address must be configured with a layer-3 interface, that is, the gateway set in the computer, you also need to set routes for vswitch gateway settings.
