This article describes how to share folders and files on a Windows XP Network.

Share files and prints on Microsoft Networks
File and print sharing components for Microsoft networks allow computers on the network to access resources on other computers over Microsoft networks. This component will be installed and enabled by default. The file and print sharing component is applied by connection through the TCP/IP protocol. To use the functions provided by this component, you must share the local folder.

File and print sharing components for Microsoft networks have the same functions as server services in Windows NT 4.0.

To share folders with other users on the network, follow these steps:

    1. OpenMy Documents). ClickStart (start), all programs (allProgram), Accessories (Attachment), Windows Explorer (Windows resource browser).
    2. Click the folder you want to share.
    3. InFile and Folder Tasks (file and Folder Tasks)ClickShare this folder (share this folder).

    5. To modify the Network Share Name of a folder, goShare Name)Enter a new name for the folder in the text box. This operation has no effect on the folder name on your local computer.

Note:The sharing feature is not applicable to Documents and Settings, program files, and Windows folders. In addition, you cannot share folders in other users' configuration files.

To set, view, modify, or delete file and folder permissions, perform the following steps in sequence:

    1. Open windows Resource Manager and find the file or folder that you want to set permissions. To open windows Resource Manager, clickStart (start), all programs (all programs), accessories (Attachment), Windows Explorer (Windows resource browser).
    2. 2. Right-click the file or folder you are located and selectProperties)And clickSecurity)Tab.

    3. If you wantGroup or user names (group or user name)To set permissions for a group or user in the list, clickAdd). 3. Enter the group or user name you want to set permissions for and clickOK (OK).

    4. 2. to modify or delete permissions for an existing group or user, click the corresponding group or user name and perform any of the following operations:

Description

    • in Windows XP Professional, the Everyone group is not included in Anonymous logon.
    • You can only set file and folder permissions on the drive that uses the NTFS file system for formatting.
    • to modify a permission, you must be the owner of the corresponding file or folder, or have the management permission granted by the file or folder owner.
    • A group or user with the full control permission on a specific folder can delete files or subfolders from the folder, you do not need to consider the permissions to protect the files or folders.
    • If the permission check box for a specific group or user is disabled, or the remove (delete) button cannot be used, this means that the permissions of the corresponding file or folder are inherited from the parent folder.
    • by default, when a new group or user is added, the group or user will have read & execute (read and execute) list folder contents (view folder content) and Read (read) permissions.
