To troubleshoot problems during Office updates from Office Update sites, use the following methods in the order in which they appear. After you complete each method, try to update Microsoft office with the Office Update Web site.
Note When you access the Office Update Web site using certain Third-party browsers or some browsers provided by your Internet service provider (ISP), the Office Update Web site may not run correctly. Alternatively, the browser may require a special configuration to properly access the Office Update Web site. If Internet Explorer is available on your computer, use the connection to your ISP connected to the Internet. You then access the Office Update Web site by using Internet Explorer.
Method One: Remove content from Microsoft Internet Explorer cache folders, cookies, history, and temporary folders in the operating system
If your temporary Internet Explorer cache folder begins to run out of allocated disk space, you may not be able to download the controls for Office updates. Free disk space by removing the temporary Internet file cache.
Please perform the following steps:
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
3. Click the General tab, and then click Delete Files under Temporary Internet files.
4. Click to clear the Remove all offline content check box, and then click OK.
5. Click the delete Cookie and then prompt you for confirmation, and then click OK.
6. Click Settings under Temporary Internet files.
7. In the Settings dialog box, click View Object.
8. Displayed in the Microsoft Windows Explorer window, click Details on the View menu.
9. If any listed object has a corrupted state, delete the object.
10. Close the Windows Explorer window, and then click OK in the Settings dialog box.
11. Click to clear History under the history record, and then click Yes when prompted for confirmation.
12. In the Internet Options dialog box, click OK.
13. Enable cookies. Please perform the following steps:
A. In Control Panel, double-click the Internet Options icon.
B. Click the Privacy tab, and then click the $ default value.
C. Click OK.
14. Click Start, click Run, type%, and then click OK.
15. Display in the Windows Explorer window to delete the contents of this temporary folder. Note You cannot delete any files that may be in use. Make sure that you have closed all running applications. Then, try to delete the contents of this folder again. If you cannot delete a particular file, delete it, you can delete all files.
Method Two: Install Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 on Windows 2000 and XP
Install Windows script 5.6. To obtain Windows script 5.6, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

After you have installed the Script tool, try to install the update from the Office Update Web site again.
Method Three: Remove the Office update detection folder
If it exists on your hard disk, remove the Office Update detection folder. This folder contains the detection directory and the updated files that are downloaded from the Office Update Web site that you are using.
To remove the Office Update detection folder, follow these steps.
Note Because there are multiple versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different from your computer. If so, please refer to the product documentation to complete these steps.
1. Click Start, click All Programs, click the attachment, and then click $ Windows Explorer.
2. In Windows Explorer, locate the OfficeUpdate11 or OfficeUpdate12 folder. By default, the folder is located at the following location:
C:Program FilesOfficeUpdate11
Or
C:Program FilesOfficeUpdate12
3. In the OfficeUpdate11 or OfficeUpdate12 folder, right-click, and then click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
4. Close Windows Explorer.
Note the folder C:Program FilesOfficeUpdate11 is deleted when you update the WEB site for Office updates. Instead, the local path% of the OfficeUPdate12 folder is created in% application. For the most recent Office update, use the OfficeUpdate12 folder.
Method Four: Remove Office update ActiveX control
Office Update ActiveX controls may be corrupted. Therefore, you may need to remove and reinstall the Office update ActiveX control.
To remove and reinstall the Office Update ActiveX control, follow these steps.
Note Because there are multiple versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different from your computer. If so, please refer to the product documentation to complete these steps.
1. Quit Internet Explorer.
2. Click Start, and then click Search.
3. In the Search Results pane, under Search Companion, click All Files and folders.
4. In all or part of the File name box, type Opuc.dll, and then click Search.
5. In the list of files, Opuc.dll, right-click, and then click $ Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the delete operation, click Yes.
Note If you opuc.dll multiple copies of a file, delete them all.
Method Five: Temporarily turn off personal firewalls, download Manager, Pop-up Blocker, and WEB accelerator products
If you use one of the following products, temporarily close the product, and then try to update the Web site using Office:
• Personal firewalls, such as Norton Personal firewalls, McAfee personal firewalls, or regional laboratories
• Download manager, such as getting permissions
• For example, download the accelerator Web Accelerator
• Pop-up Blocker
Caution This workaround may cause your computer or network to be more vulnerable to malicious users or malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend using this workaround, but provide this information so that you can decide to implement this workaround yourself. Using this workaround requires your own risk.
To temporarily turn off one of these products, follow these steps:
1. Close your personal firewall, download Manager, Pop-up Blocker, or Web accelerator. For more information about how to do this, check the documentation for your personal firewall product, download the Organizer, Pop-up Blocker, or Web accelerator.
2. Try using Office to update your Web site. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site, and then click Check for Updates:

3. When the Office updates the Web site update process is complete, just open the personal firewall, download Manager, Pop-up Blocker, or Web accelerator shutdown in step 1.
Method VI: Configure Internet Explorer security settings and add http://office.microsoft.com to the list of trusted sites
Internet Explorer security settings are configured to enable Internet Explorer to register signed ActiveX controls.
Important These steps may increase security risk. These steps also make your computer or network more vulnerable to attacks by malicious users or malicious software such as viruses. We recommend this article to describe the processes that are designed to enable programs to run, or to implement specific program functions. Before making these changes, we recommend that you have a risk assessment associated with implementing this process in your particular environment. If you choose to implement this process, take any appropriate additional measures to help protect your system. We recommend that this process be used only if this process is really needed.
To enable Internet Explorer to register a signed ActiveX control, follow these steps:
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
3. Click the Security tab, and then click the Internet.
4. Click the default level, and then click OK.
Add http://office.microsoft.com to your list of trusted sites in Internet Explorer so that you can successfully load the Office Update ActiveX control.
Please perform the following steps:
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
3. Click the Security tab, click the Trusted site, and then click Site.
4. Clear requires server authentication (https: check boxes for all sites in this zone.)
5. When you add the Web site to this area box, type http://office.microsoft.com, and then click Add.
6. Click OK two times.
Method VII: Identify and correct damaged Office installations
If the installation of a Microsoft Office product on a damaged computer may fail detection. Office products are programs that are based on Microsoft Windows Installer. If the Windows installer database on your computer runs incorrectly or loses cached MSP files, you may fail detection. You can identify and correct damaged Office installations. Please perform the following steps:
1. Delete any Office programs that you no longer need to install on your computer by using the Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Note When you view the Add or Remove Programs, find the Office programs that you think you have deleted that might still appear on your computer. If you find any programs that meet this criteria, delete them.
2. Open the Office product, click Help, and then click Detect and Repair.
Repeat all Office programs for this procedure. Detecting and repairing the procedure fails if the Office installation source/cache may be corrupted. In this case, run the following article FixIt. If the detection and repair process and the uninstall process still do not work, you must manually remove the Office installation
In addition to the damaged Office installation, you may find that the files for your local installation source have been removed from Office 2003 installations. Typically, you will be prompted for your installation media when the source file is required in this case. However, this may not always happen. You may receive an error message stating that Setup cannot find one of the installation files.

Method Eight: Disable script or proxy server settings
Please perform the following steps:
1. In Control Panel, double-click the Internet Options icon.
2. Click the Connection tab, and then click LAN Settings.
3. Clear the Use Automatic configuration script checkbox, click and then click to clear the Use Proxy server check box.
4. Make sure the auto-Detect settings check box is selected.
5. Click OK two times to close the Internet Properties dialog box.
Method IX: Perform a clean boot on a computer that is based on your operating system
METHOD Ten: Troubleshoot network connectivity issues
The detection failure may be caused by a network connectivity problem.
If you must connect to another computer on the internet, try using another computer to access the Office Update Web site.
If you are unable to update the installation process with Office, because your computer is a proxy server and a proxy server that makes the Office Update installation process unavailable, you may need to contact your network administrator or Internet service Provider (ISP) for assistance or bypass in your proxy server configuration.
Method 11: Manually download and install the update
You can install each update manually. Please perform the following steps:
1. Locate the following Microsoft Web site:

2. When browsing the download, click the version of the updated office that you want to download, and then select the updated Office product that you want to download.

4. Click Download.
5. In the File Download dialog box, click Save.
6. Locate the folder where you want to save the file, and then click Save.
7. When the download is complete, double-click the downloaded file to install it. Repeat these steps for each update that you want to install.
Method 12: Change the Startup type to manual Windows installer
To change the startup type to Windows installer, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type Services.msc, and then click OK.
2. In Windows Installer, right-click, and then click Properties.
3. On the General tab, in the list of startup types, click Manual, and then click OK.
Method 13: Disable, and then re-enable the local installation source by using the Local Installation Source Tool
1. Quit all Office programs.
2. Locate the following Microsoft Web site:

4. In the File Download dialog box, click Save.
5. Locate the folder where you want to save the LISTool.exe file, and then click Save.
6. Open the Local Installation Source tool, save the folder, and then double-click LISTool.exe.
7. Click Delete and disable LIS, and then click Next.
8. Accept the Microsoft Software License Terms, and then click Next.
9. Click to select the local installation source for which you want to disable, click Next, and then click $ to remove the check box for the program.
10. When you receive the following message, click OK:
The Microsoft Office Local Installation source has been successfully deleted or disabled.
11. Run detection and repair by using listools products that are disabled.
12. After the update process is complete, run LisTool.exe again and choose to enable the LIS option.
13. Accept the Microsoft Software License Terms, and then click Next.
14. Click to select the check box for the program for which you want to enable the local installation source, and then click $ Next.
15. Click Enable.
16. When you receive the following message, click OK:
The Microsoft Office Local Installation source was successfully enabled.
