Layer-3 switching technology is layer-2 switching technology and layer-3 routing forwarding technology. Traditional switching technology operates on the data link layer. layer-3 switching technology implements high-speed packet forwarding at the network layer. The layer-3 switching technology can be used to achieve the network routing function and achieve optimal network performance according to different network conditions. The most important purpose of a layer-3 switch is to increase data exchange within a large LAN, which cannot replace the router. It is interconnected between subnets in the same LAN and routes between VLANs in the LAN, A layer-3 switch is used to replace a vro. A vro is used only when network access across regions is required between the LAN and the Internet.

After learning about the layer-3 switching technology, we use the VTP technology of the switch to implement communication between different VLANs. The main reason for using the VTP technology is that it greatly reduces the management operations on VLANs, you can easily add, delete, and adjust Vlan configurations in the network to achieve systematic management.

When a layer-3 switch is divided into multiple VLANs, and each Vlan uses IP addresses of different network segments, all computers connected to the switch must communicate with each other, the interface IP address of each Vlan must be set, and the gateway must be set for all computers. The Gateway is the IP address of the uplink Vlan interface. For example, the topology of a layer-3 Switch:

Case study: Set the core switch as The vtp server and create vlan 10 and vlan 20. Set the access layer switch as The VTP client so that they can implement Vlan relay, configure the switch interconnection port as the Trunk type, and plan the vlan port allocation of the switch to implement communication between different VLANs and different network segments.

The port mode of a vswitch is divided into the Acess type and the Trunk type. By default, the port mode of a vswitch is Access. This type of port can only belong to one Vlan and is usually used to connect to a computer. The Trunk type port can allow communication between multiple VLANs, it is generally used for vswitch interconnection. For example:
