Part of this article I found on the Internet, the link is as follows: VM Workstation virtual machine file import to Esx Server (VMX to OVF format)
1. About the VMX format
The VMX file is a configuration file for the VMware Virtual machine system, note that this file will not be found after you have just installed VMware Workstation, and this file does not appear until you have established a virtual machine in VMware Workstation. This file is used to record the configuration of the virtual machine you built, such as how much memory, what type of hard disk and so on.
2. ovf format
The Open Virtualization Format (OVF) specification is a standard developed within the distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) Association, designed to promote an open, secure, portable, effective, and extensible format. Used to encapsulate and distribute the software that will run on the virtual machine.
After I install esxi4.1, I want to import the virtual host under workstation under the original configuration. But I found that if the original VMware files are imported into the ESX server intact, when the service will appear error, so the original workstation inside the file into an OVF file and import it.
3. Conversion Tools
Please use workstation7.0 above version with a OVFTool.exe tool, how your application installed in the default path can be found in the C:\Program files\vmware\vmware OVF tool.
Enter "cmd" on the command line at the start of window and the following command line appears. Input Cd:c:\program files\vmware\vmware ovf Tool
C:\Program files\vmware\vmware ovf tool\ovftool.exe "original file path \xxx.vmx" & nbsp "Target path \xxx.ovf" Press "enter" to start the conversion.
as shown in Figure after completion, the following four files appear: the conversion from workstation to OVF is now complete
