How to install GIMP 2.8.16 on Ubuntu 16.04, 15.10, and 14.04
GIMP image editor 2.8.16 was released on its 20th birthday. The following describes how to install or upgrade GIMP in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 and its derivative versions, such as Linux Mint 17.x/ 13 and Elementary OS Freya.
GIMP 2.8.16 supports the Layer groups in the OpenRaster file, fixes the layer group support and various user interface improvements in the PSD, fixes the build system on OSX, and more new changes. Please read the official statement.

How to install or upgrade:
Thanks to Otto Meier, the latest GIMP package in Ubuntu PPA can be used for all current Ubuntu versions and Their Derivative versions.
1. Add GIMP PPA
Open the terminal from Unity Dash or press Ctrl + Alt + T to open the terminal. After it is opened, paste the following command and press Enter:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
Add GIMP PPA
Enter your password, the password will not be displayed on the terminal, and then press enter to continue.
2. install or upgrade the editor.
After the PPA is added, start the Software Updater (in Mint, It is the Software Manager ). After checking the update, you will see the update list of GIMP. Click "Install Now" to upgrade.
For those who like Linux commands, execute the following commands in sequence, refresh the repository cache, and then install GIMP:
Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get install gimp
3. (optional) uninstall
If you want to uninstall or downgrade the GIMP image editor. Delete it directly from the software center, or run the following command to clear and downgrade the software:
sudoapt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
