These two days have been trying to install Ubuntu on a U disk, of course, not Live USB, but as installed on the hard disk in Ubuntu installed on the U disk. The advantage of this is that you can install and update your software as you would with a system on your hard drive without destroying the Win system on your hard drive, and it's also portable.
After several installations and after tossing, finally test success, look back, in fact, is still very simple, and hard disk installation is basically similar to the main need to note that the installation of the time to choose a good Boot Loader installed on the U disk instead of the hard drive, so will not destroy the MBR of the hard disk.
Here is a simple talk.
Installation conditions: I used a "G" U disk, Ubuntu installed to occupy 2 G more space, plus swap swap partition, 4 G u disk is necessary. It is recommended that you use 8 g or G to have more space to install the required software. Also, of course, you will need a Ubntu 10.10 installation disk, CD or USB Live disk.
Installation Note: In the installation of the same as normal on the hard disk installation of Ubntu, from the CD or USB Live disk boot installation program, of course, U disk will also be inserted in the machine. The key is to use the partition when the manual partition, and then on the Boot Loader choose to install to the U disk, see the following figure.
The other is the same as the hard disk installation step by step on it, after installation can be set up in the BIOS through the USB device to start. The machine will call the Grub boot loader on the U disk, and since I have a win XP on my hard drive, you can see from the image below that the Win XP startup item was automatically identified and added to the Grub boot loader when installing Ubuntu. The whole process is very simple. Of course, because of the U disk I/O speed limit, the use of Ubuntu on U disk, the most important is in the installation package of this need to read and write disk operations, the whole system will appear a bit of cards, the other operations are basically the same as in the hard disk.
