How to manage SharePoint Designer settings in SharePoint Central Administration

SharePoint Designer (SPD) is a powerful tool to help create solutions quickly. By connecting to a site, users are free to make changes to the site. Includes skins, workflows, and connections to external sources.

The problem with this feature is that creating a customization that inadvertently burdens the server can cause havoc. The result may be a degraded SharePoint farm response that affects site performance in response.

Another problem is that users may be able to modify the appearance of individual Web sites, leaving the company's standards. This is multiplied by the number of users, and you will realize that this is a big problem.

SharePoint 2010 has a solution that either restricts users to using SPD or completely denies it. This article describes how and where to set up.

Get ready:

You must have field-level administrative privileges.

Begin:

1. Open the Management Center.

2. Click application Management--manage Web applications.

3. Click on the right side of the Web application you want to manage.

4. Click general Settings in the Ribbon--select SharePoint Designer.

5. You will see:

Allow SharePoint Designer in this Web application: The purge selection disables SPD throughout the Web application.

Allow site collection administrators to detach a Web page from a site template: Once the selection is cleared, the site administrator will not be able to detach the page and edit them in the SPD.

Allow site collection administrators to customize master pages and layout pages: Once selected, the site administrator will not be able to customize the page through the SPD.

Allows site collection administrators to view the URL structure of their Web site: After the selection is cleared, the site collection administrator is not allowed to manage the URL schema through SPD.
