Do you need to rebuild the Spotlight index of the entire MAC system? This is simple, although rebuilding the index itself will take some time. Here's how to manually rebuild the index:
Open System Preferences: Click "Spotlight" and select "privacy". Drag the system disk in which Mac OS X resides (or any other disk required)
If the confirmation box pops up, click OK. Now, select the disk you just added and click-to remove it from the list
Note: If you drag a directory or disk into the privacy list, all content under that directory or disk will be completely excluded from the Spotlight index.
Next, Spotlight will immediately start indexing the disk that was just being manipulated. The length of the index depends on how much content is on the disk. You can see the progress and time remaining in the Spotlight menu. You can check progress at any time. At the same time, the speed of the computer may also be affected during the index rebuild because the Mdworker and MDS processes consume CPU resources and do a lot of disk operations.
