To help you diagnose unknown errors or other problems, you should disable common Start Programs, settings, and drivers when starting Microsoft Windows XP to eliminate possible software conflicts. This process is called "clean startup ". This article describes how to perform a clean start, how to start the Windows Installer Service, and how to restore the system from the Clean start state.

Note: Some functions may be temporarily lost after the clean startup is performed according to the instructions. If you restore the settings, you can restore the function, but you may receive the original error message or encounter a suspicious phenomenon.

How to perform clean startup in Windows XP

Note: You must log on as an administrator or a member of the Administrator group to perform these steps. If your computer is connected to the network, the network policy setting may also prevent you from performing these steps.

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the open box, and click OK ".

2. on the General tab, click "available startup", and then clear the "process SYSTEM. INI file", "process WIN. INI file", and the "load startup Item" check box. The check box "use original BOOT. INI" cannot be cleared.

3. On the "services" tab, select the "hide all Microsoft services" check box and click "Disable all ".

4. Click OK, and then click restart to restart the computer.

5. After Windows is started, check whether the symptoms still appear.

Note: Check the General tab carefully to make sure that the check boxes that have been cleared are still in the clear status. If none of these check boxes are selected, continue with step 1. If you disable the "Load System Service" check box only, it indicates that the computer has not started properly. If other check boxes are disabled and the problem persists, you can ask the manufacturer for help from the Program (which re-selects the check box of Msconfig.

If these check boxes are not selected and the problem persists, you may need to repeat steps 1 to 5 and clear the "Load System Service" check box on the "General" tab. This will temporarily disable Microsoft services (such as Internet services, Plug and Play services, event logging services, and Error Reporting Services) and permanently delete all restore points of the system recovery utility. Do not perform this operation if you want to retain the Restore point for system recovery or you must use Microsoft services to detect problems.

6. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the open box, and click OK ".

7. On the "General" tab, select the "process SYSTEM. INI file" check box, click "OK", and then click "restart" to restart the computer. If the problem persists, the problem is related to items in the System. ini file. If this problem no longer occurs, repeat this step on the "process WIN. INI file", "load startup Item", and "Load System Service" check boxes until the problem occurs. After a problem occurs, the last one you choose is the one that has the problem.

Note: Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not use the System Configuration Utility to modify the Boot. ini file on your computer without expert guidance from Microsoft. Modifying this file may make your computer unusable. How to start the Windows Installer Service

Click Start, right-click my computer, and then click manage ". 2. In the left pane, click services and applications, and then click Services ". 3.
