If you need to reinstall Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) on a server that is running Microsoft Exchange2000 Server or Microsoft ExchangeServer 2003, you must also reinstall Exchange to restore some links to IIS that provide Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and Outlook Web Access (OWA) features. This article describes how to reinstall IIS and exchange while retaining the existing Exchange Information store.
To remove and reinstall IIS and Exchange, follow these steps:
Step 1: Back up your data
Perform online backups of the information store, System State data, and the IIS metabase.
Step 2: Dismount the mailbox and the Public information store
Dismount the mailbox and the public information store. To do this, follow these steps: 1. In Microsoft Exchange System Manager, double-click the Servers container, double-click the name of the server to which you want to reinstall the components, and then double-click the correct storage group.
2. Right-click Mailbox Store (ServerName), and then click Dismount Store.
3. Right-click Public folder Store (ServerName), and then click Dismount Store.
Step 3: Stop the Exchange service and remove IIS
1. Stop the Microsoft exchange Information Store "is" service. To do this, in Computer Management, double-click Services and applications, click Services, right-click Microsoft Exchange Information Store, and then click Stop.
2. Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the Program Files\Exchsrvr folder.
3. Rename the MDBDATA folders on all drives to Mdbdataold, and then move them to another location, such as C:\.
Note: If you have more than one MDBDATA folder, you must remember the original location of each folder.
4. Delete IIS. To do this, follow these steps: A. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
B. Click Add/Remove Windows components.
C. Click Internet Information Services (IIS).
D. Click More information.
E. Click to clear the check box for all subcomponents other than common files, click OK, and then click Next.
F. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete this procedure.
Step 4: Reinstall Internet Information Services and reapply the service Pack
Note: Make sure that the latest security patches and Service packs are available locally. To view and download the latest Service packs and security patches
1. Disconnect the server from the network, and then reinstall Internet Information Services. To do this, in Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows components.
2. Click to select the Internet Information Services (IIS) check box, and then click Details.
3. Make sure that the NNTP service check box and the SMTP service check box are selected, and then click OK.
4. Click Next, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation.
5. Apply all the latest Windows 2000Service packs, patches, and security patches to the server, and then reconnect them to the network.
