Ntdetect.com collects the following types of hardware information:

& ISA devices installed in the ISA slot

Ntdetect failed when computer starts
Symptoms:
When you start a computer running Windows, the startup process may fail, and you may receive the following error message:
Ntdetect Failed
Reason:
This problem can occur if the Ntdetect.com file is missing or corrupted.
Ntdetect.com file loss or corruption solution:
Windows NT 4.0
To resolve this issue in Windows NT 4.0, use the Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) to recover the boot file: 1. Use Windows NT 4.0 Setup Disk 1 to start the computer.
2. When prompted, insert Windows NT 4.0 installation Disk 2.
3. When displaying the Windows NT Server installation screen, press the R key to begin the repair process.
4. Use the arrow keys to select from the Repair option to check the startup environment, press Enter, and deselect all other repair options.
5. Select Continue, press Enter, and then follow the instructions to detect mass storage devices.
6. When prompted, insert the ERD.
7. When prompted, insert the Windows NT Server 4.0 installation CD.
8. After the repair process is complete, remove the ERD from the floppy disk drive, and then press Enter to restart the computer.
Windows 2000
To troubleshoot this problem in Windows 2000, follow these steps: 1. Start the computer from the Windows 2000 installation CD.
2. On the "Welcome to Setup" menu, select the R key to repair.
3. Select Manual Repair.
4. Select only the startup environment from the repair option.
5. When prompted, insert the Emergency Repair Disk (ERD). If you do not have an ERD, you can continue.
6. After the repair process is complete, remove the ERD from the floppy disk drive, and then press Enter to restart the computer
