How to track and determine IP addresses

1 Open a command-line console window. On Mac systems, the application is called a terminal (Terminal), which is located in the Utilities folder. On the Windows system, click Start, then click on the Attachment (accessories), and then click Command Prompt. The app lets us use the ping command to get the IP address of any Web site.

1 Open the email client. You can determine the sending IP address of a message by looking at the information frame header. The information frame header looks like a bunch of things that you enter with the keyboard.

2 View the information frame header. In the View menu, you can set options to display all or extended Frame header content, and there will be a lot of new information coming from the sender and sent to the region. But you only need to find a small part of it in this information. Then find the Received section, and in this section you will see something like "From ...". followed by an IP address with the same format as the one above. You can select one, and then copy it to the Clipboard. In the example below, we select 66.220.144.152 and then copy it. We can see that the message says receive from mx-out.facebook.com, so we can test whether this IP address is accurate.

3 Open the Command-line console window. You can do this using the steps described earlier. The difference is that this time, instead of using the ping command, you run the WHOIS command to detect it. In your console terminal window, at the cursor blinking, enter Whois 66.220.144.152, and then press enter . The command is sent to a database for querying, and then returns the registration information for that IP address. In the example in this article, we determined that the information was sent from Facebook. You can also get full address information for that domain name registrant.

4 Use a different lookup method. You may not want to use a terminal window, or the app is not installed on your computer. In this case, you can try using the Internet to find, for example, Ip-lookup. The site can provide you with the information returned by the WHOIS command, and in many cases, you can get more information through the site.
