How to transform a dynamic disk to a basic disk without compromising data

It's easy to convert a basic disk into a dynamic disk on Microsoft Windows 2000/xp/2003/2008/vista and Windows 7, but it's not easy to convert a dynamic disk to a basic disk. Why is that?
