How to use a remote CD to share a DVD or CD on a Mac or Windows

1. Insert the MacOS X 1 installation disc of the MacBook Air and run "DVD or CD sharing Settings ".

2. If you are using a Windows-based computer (Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later), continue to Step 5.
3. If you are using a Mac-based computer (Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later), go to "system preference settings" and click "share.
4. Select the check box marked as "DVD or CD sharing.
   Note:If you want others to request permission before using the optical drive on your computer, select the "please ask if I allow others to use my DVD drive" option. For Mac OS x tiger 10.4.10 and Mac OS X Leopard, see the screen snapshots below.
   
5. If you are using a Windows-based computer, make sure that "DVD or CD sharing" is installed in step 1, and then clickStartButton, as shown below.

7. After entering the control panel, clickDVD or CD sharing options, As shown below.
   

1. You must select "DVD or CD sharing" (as shown below) to use the MacBook Air Optical Drive. If you want others to request permission before using the optical drive on your computer, select the "please ask if I allow others to use my DVD drive" option.
3. After the software is installed and "DVD or CD sharing" is enabled, go to the MacBook Air, open the finder, and selectRemote CD. Now, you will see a computer with "DVD or CD sharing" enabled.

If MacBook Air can do this, can other Mac do? The answer is yes, but not as simple as you think. Enable CD/DVD sharing on two machines.
Then enter the following terminal command on a computer without a CD/DVD:
$ Defaults write com. Apple. networkbrowser enableodiskbrowsing-bool true
$ Defaults write com. Apple. networkbrowser odssupported-bool true
Restart the computer. After restarting the computer, you can view the shared CD/DVD drive on the sidebar of the finder.
Be sure to remove the option "Please ask if I allow others to use my DVD drive"
