Environment
In a small office, you can activate China Telecom ADSL Broadband and use a NETGEAR wireless router to share the Internet. In the corner of the meeting room, the signal is weak. How can we effectively improve the coverage of wireless networks?
Solution
Confirm that the original model supports the wireless relay (WDS) function, purchase a new Netgear wireless router, and perform wireless relay with the existing wireless routes.
Note]If the original wireless router in the office belongs to another brand. Make sure that the existing wireless routes have the wireless relay function. Only when WDS is available can two wireless devices implement relay.
In addition, currently, WDS is not an international standard. wireless relay between cross-brand products cannot guarantee success.
For more information about WDS functions, see: http://www.netgear.com.cn/kb_web_files/router10095.htm
All wireless aps in the Netgear wireless product line support the WDS function. Some wireless routers have gradually extended this function. The specific models are shown in the table below. (Wgr614v9/kwgr614 must be upgraded to the latest firmware version)

This configuration method applies to the above models.
Network Topology
A connects to the broadband, and B relay with a at the far end.
Note]The MAC address of the Netgear router. You can view the barcode on the back of the device, or the MAC address under the "vro status" and "LAN port" on the management interface, it is the Mac used for relay.
Radio Relay Settings
- Log on to the Management Interface 192.168.1.1 of A and clickInstall->Wireless Settings. If the default wireless channel of the router is auto (automatic), you must first change the channel to a fixed value. We recommend that you use 1, 6, or 11.
Note]The default wireless network identifier is NetGear. You can also use any number or letter to name the two routers for relay. The SSID can be the same or different. If you want the wireless client to implement roaming within the range of two wireless routers, set the SSID to the same.
- ClickAdvanced->Wireless relay function, Set relay:
I)Check Before "enable wireless relay;
Ii)Select "wireless base station" and enter the MAC address of router B in "Repeater MAC address 1;
Iii)If vroa A does not require wireless coverage, it is checked before "disabling wireless client access". In this example, A is responsible for wireless coverage in the office area and therefore cannot be checked.
After setting, click "application ".
- Before completing the configuration, router B connects to a LAN port of Route B in a wired way using only one computer without accessing the LAN. Similarly, use the default 192.168.1.1 address to log on to the management interface of B. In the same way as step 1, change the wireless channel to 1 (If Step 1 selects 6 or 11, B must be consistent with ).
- ClickAdvanced->Wireless relay function, Set relay:
I)Check Before "enable wireless relay;
Ii)Select "Wireless Repeater" mode. In "base station MAC address", enter the MAC address of router;
Iii)When
When working in the "Wireless Repeater" mode, the wireless router becomes a common Wireless AP. In the "Repeater IP Address", the idle IP address in the LAN can be assigned as the management location of this Wireless AP.
Address, for example, 192.168.1.100. If you need to log on to the management interface of the device in the future, you need to use this new IP address instead of the default 192.168.1.1. Please note this!
After setting, click "application ".
Relay success or failure test
Under normal circumstances, after completing the above steps, the wireless relay between router A and router B can be successfully established. There are also more intuitive ways to verify whether the relay is successful.
Connect a computer to a LAN port of Route B in wired mode. Can ingress access the management interface of route. If the access is available, the surface relay is successful. If the access is unavailable, perform troubleshooting according to the preceding steps.Wireless SettingsInRegion,Mode,ChannelsAnd other parameters are consistent.
Relay Encryption
With the increasing popularity of Wireless LAN applications, security encryption is particularly necessary. However, when using WDS, the selection of encryption has certain limitations.
- Two devices for wireless relay must be selectedSame Encryption Method,Same Password.
- When using a NETGEAR wireless router for wireless relay,Only supportedWEPEncryption.
[Note] If WPA or wpa2 encryption is set in the vro, the following warning is displayed when you click "enable wireless relay. In this case, you must change the encryption to WEP or cancel the encryption before you can continue to set the relay function.
- WEP Encryption Settings
For example, if the two wnr612 servers are configured as follows, select WEP encryption from "Security Options" in "Install-> Wireless Settings, enter the wireless password manually in key 1 (you must follow the WEP key rules to set the password ):
WEP Key setting rules:
64-bit WEP-key 1 Enter ten hexadecimal digits ("0-9" ten digits and "A-F" six letters, any combination of these sixteen characters );
128-bit WEP-key-1 Enter 26 hexadecimal digits ("0-9" ten digits and "A-F" six letters, any combination of these sixteen characters ).
